The first two Electronica compilations were bloody wicked! I got a promo recently of "Chill Out Classics Vol 1" from the Chill Out Label. Who are they? It`s wierd because I hadn`t heard of them but they had heard of me and Kinetic Illusion! Anyway the promo seems to be a mix of real classical music on the ambient/experimental tip. Being a complete philistine I couldn`t tell you who the tracks are by but I recognised one or two of them from adverts (ha ha I`m so thick!), and I guess Neptune by Holst must be there too. Don`t get me wrong, this is _real_ classical music, from after 800 AD, not just strings-laden ambient! Pretty damn smart too, if you ask me... 'Ambiento A Fax Compilation' REFCD001 (Reflective Records 415 495 6212) This hasn't been far from the CDPlayer for a week. Definitely ambient, but with beats throughout. Sounds like minimalist electronic jazz almost, in that most of the cuts sound performed rather than sequenced. A must. 'On Remixes' Aphex Twin Warp WAP 39 CDR May be old news to you guys, but this is the definite stuff. The 'd-scape' mix sounds like the rhythm track comes from someone pinching their cheek and wiggling it (an old schoolyard trick), but delightfully hypnotic. The reload mix is also nice and is also contained on the US Sire 'On' single. 'Ritual of Life/An Accident in Paradise' Sven Vath Warner Brothers 9 41403-2 For pure quantity, this can't be beat -- two songs, nine remixes (most of which bear only coincidental resemblance to the original), clocking at 74 minutes. I got it for $6 US. This is my first Sven Vath disc, and while it's a little more dancy than my usual taste I like it quite a bit. Of particular interest are the spicelab mixes, which are trippy in the extreme. Well, next time I post, I'll try and be more specific ...

He quite often plays 10 -15 hour sets (but then you knew that anyway) The interviewer (Alix Sharkey) saw him at Final Frontier Sven's views on drugs (interesting): "I feel so angry about it because some kids, when they know Sven's coming they take even more drugs, because they know they can trust me, they know I'll take them on a spiritual journey......They don't even get the right stuff. Somewhere out there are these ugly bastards sitting round in luxury, making more money out of the whole music movement than all the DJs and artists put together. And they sell shit like horse tranquilisers." SV is planning a tour with a Catalan art group/ circus called La Fura dels Baus (something like Archaos from the sound of them), whose acts involve chainsaws and flame throwers (heheheh). He is "tired of all that rave shit. It's two years now since Oscillate began, so it's a bit of a special occasion this one. Three live acts, an extra large sound system, regular Oscillate non-dj's HIA & (new regular) Stef from A Positive Life, plus special guest on the decks, Paul Hartnoll (Orbital), extra visuals, a chillout room, a nice venue..... HIA will be on first, being the hosts, followed by Sun Electric, and Locust. It runs from 9 till 6, and there is a soft drinks licence all night, NO ALCOHOL will be available. We would advise buying tickets in advance, (stlg10) not only to be sure of getting in, but also to get in quicker, since the queue for ticket holders will be let in first. We've heard that the whole process of getting in takes quite a while, partly because of the THOROUGH SEARCHES - please take note! Is the purpose of this list to talk *only* about what the press would label IDM? Or is the purpose of this list to get people who are interested in IDM together to talk about music? Any time a list like this is formed, there will be articles which go slightly beyond the charter. A discussion about origins might lead to talk about, say, Kraftwerk, Fripp and Eno, or maybe Juan Atkins or Carl Craig. A discussion about Orbital might lead to someone mentioning Piano Phase by Steve Reich. Is this bad? Do we want to restrict all discussion to music which the press would consider IDM? I'd like all of you to think about the posts you have made since joining the list, and the posts that you have enjoyed reading since being on the list. Make a mental list. Strike out anything which, strictly speaking, the press (say... Melody Maker) would not lump in with all the IDM bands. "Bzzt. The IDM police have decided that Carl Craig is not, strictly speaking, and IDM kind of guy. Your article will be tossed into the bit bucket." Let me close by saying that in my experience, newsgroup and mailing list content is determined not so much by charter, but by mutual consent. (For those of you who have been around long enough (Greg), think back to rec.music.gaffa.) Before this flame war, I had had the impression that most people here were happy with the content of the list. If it is indeed true that there is a large segment which is unhappy with the breadth of discussion, we should split off a new mailing list and go our separate ways. I hope it doesn't come to this.

No, I don't think the list should limit itself too strictly to just intelligent techno. But since that is the primary purpose of this list, and it appears that many of the people on this list are not interested in discussing, say, trance, we should respect that. Your track 9 is not Speedy J. On some copies (I heard that later pressings corrected the problem), track 9 and 10 are flipped. And if you look at your copy of The Orb's 'Adventures...', you'll note that Alex Patterson is one half of the Orb. The track on AI is an early version done when Jimi Cauty of the KLF was working with Patterson as the Orb. Cauty later left.

They are similiar. This track, in various incantations, can be found on the following cds: (at least - check the Orb discography...) The Orb - "Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain..." (UK Big Life BLRDB 27) ** These were initially mega rare until recently re-issued by Big Life The Orb - Peel Sessions (US Strange Fruit DE18119-2) ** The version on here is called "Huge Ever Growing... (loving you)", hence the connection. The Orb - Aubrey Mixes (US Caroline CAROL 1717-2) In addition to the Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld release. Hmmm... I'd always assumed that the track order on the AI liner notes was incorrect. The track you're talking about definitely *sounds* like the Orb live, but it's credited to someone else (Speedy J, I guess. I don't have the disk with me to check). Has it always been (CD) this high ? The guy at the shop also wondered about the price as afterall it's only 4 track ep(?). I didn't buy it (yet) as I'm not sure if it's worth that much money. Another bubblequestion: that same shop has also been promising to get Analog Bubblebath 3 (cd) for some time now. Is it possible to get it or am I hoping for something that will never come ? Janne

I got a gift certificate to a record store I usually don't patronize, and after subjecting the increasingly surly staff to a series of listening requests, (if they're not into ambient or techno, some of the stuff I had them play came as quite a shock I'm sure) this was the best of the stuff they had around. That and Flying High by the Irresistable Force, about which much has already been said. Anyway this is "Big Rooms" Deep Space Network (Source Records CD 930611 FAX +49/6221/162118) I checked the archives and didn't see any mention of Deep Space Network, but they are apparently Two Guys (David Moufang and Jonas Grossman) apparently from Deutschland. But this disk is definitely a triumph of the genre, which leads me to wonder what else IDM'ers are missing out on. Do we have any German hipsters on the list. This is definitely great stuff. Mostly quiet, funky beats, interesting percussion some of which sounds to be played live, in jazz jamming mode whether on real instruments or e-drum pads. The emphasis is on a wide psychoacoustic space (hence the title), kind of like players jamming in a cathedral. There is also a bit of quiet jazz playing here too, kind of like Can. And lots of tasteful sampled drum loops from a variety of sources. The stand out track is "The Beyond Within" which is a kind of kitchen sink opus -- Ethnic drumming loops, NASA astronaut dialog, bleepy synth solos and layered drum loops. Every IDM cliche thrown together into one song, yet hypnotic, varied and danceable. What more could you ask for? yeah, i picked this up from eastern block when it came out on impulse. my favourite track has to be the first. the way the guy is recorded makes the sound of his voice so encompasing, it completely draws you in... i listen to this mostly when i'm in a 'chill-out' mood, though there are a couple of quite dancable tracks on it. going back to the first track, it's brilliant when the 'organ' voice comes in - it fits so perfectly with the blokes voice. very dreamy stuff. reccomended listening indeed, though you may not want to buy it! :) jAmz ________________________________ j.p.walsh@bradford.ac.uk || ___________________________|| fEed yOuR hEaD - mEgAdaWg

Applied Rhythmic Technology: Unexplained Phenomyna (ART, UK) CD ART has been responsible for some of the early Black Dog releases and Kirk Degiorgio's (sp?) label doesn't let me down this time either. A full lenght cd of subtle & mellow electronic listening music very much in the WARP AI vein - Speedy J's offering being probably the closest to this. The overall feeling is that of slight melancholy (oh my! but that is new to IDM :) and the subdued beats carry the simple melodies well. Almost all of the tracks are builders as they start off with just a few ingredients and build up from there. They're also growers as first listening may not reveal much about this disc. Simple melodies and easy listening, but this is far from muzak and equals - or maybe even surpasses AI 2. If you only listen to one track, make it "Into the other world." Another full lenght cd that I've played a lot recently is Living Room's Roomservice on Nightvision. Again, extremly IDMish, but Orlando Voorn offers a greater variety of tracks than ART - even if the overall quality isn't quite as good. If you only listen to one track make it "Roomservice". On a similar note, FSOL was interviewed by a Norwegian newspaper, and they did, of course, ask FSOL what they thought of Biosphere, to which Cobain replied he only liked one (!) track on "Microgravity", namely "Cloudwalker", and he thought the rest of the CD wasn't very good. He also thought most people shouldn't release complete albums, "maybe including ourselves" (obviously said with a grin). Well, I wouldn't have missed Lifeforms, Accelerator and half of ;) Tales of Ephidrina for the world.

My Mercury Mouth ep, the difference being the track "Dust-up Beats". The way to tell is to look at the etching on the inner groove, my copy is labeled JBO-20-A, the one everyone else seems to have is JBO-20-B. The mixes are pretty different but I tend to prefer version "B". For the longest time, whenever I heard someone play that track I always thought it sounded better than my copy. t:me recordings seems to be the ambient dub label for instinct. But I'm not sure...but here is the track listing plus my views and opinions of each song. em:t0094 ex-280-2 instinct records 1. coco,steel & lovebomb harlem 8:01 This song is a nice funky ambient song with samples of street sounds and conversations. A repeditive funky bass, guitar and flute makes up the majority of the song. There is also a very quiet sample of a kriss kross song in here too. 2. voodoo warriors of love sweat 8:35 This song appears on the Chill Out Phase 2 compilation. The song is a really cool dub song with natural sounding percussions and a little bit of vocal samples. 3. bad data deep freeze 5:23 Ambient synths and random percussions. Nice effects and very ambient. 4. gas pixels 1:27 This song is percussion free and is more of an intermission than a song. 5. qubism anthropomorhic 7:51 Chime loops pan left to right. This song seems to build and build, bringing in more and more samples that imitate each other. 4:27 into the song and it is ruined with a cheezy sounding synth sample. Little percussions..if none. 6. milan earthloop 3:43 Sounds like Oribtal with rehashed samples from Meat Beat Manifiesto. There are also Moby sounding female vocal samples in the song. This is actually a really good song. The psychobabble samples could be smoothed out though, perhaps a filter or two. 7. miasma walking blindfold 5:05 The first 9 second loop sounds exactly like the pan flutes from the Orb:UFOrb's O.O.B.E. There are a few bits of percussion and sustained single note pianos. Some female vocal loops and a nice accoustic guitar. 8. strawberry girl poesi 7:43 Bizarre gurgling sounds with Depeche Mode sounding bleeps. But this is all ruined with some french woman whispering sweet nothings into track. 9. woob void, part 1 12:17 This song is realy good. Humming bass sounds with stereo effects to trip the ear. It has some samples that remind me of FSOL. The climax of the song is the rolling drums that pan left and right with a diving bass and "We are the future" samples. The ending sounds like the musician fell asleep at the synth. Overall...this compilation is pretty good. It could do without the french woman, but the frongs on the cover make up for that. I would probably give it a 7 out of 10 rating.

Well, I really like it so there! Seriously, I got this and Snivilisation on Monday and it must be said that it's Snivilisation which has blown me away - 76:14's very nice but it just doesn't go anywhere particularly (see under Namlook, P.) However, put it on late at night, roll up a biggy and lie back and you'll find it's very pleasureable :) Snivilisation - well, this is something else. Orbital lose the plot big-time and leap out of the 'IDM' ghetto (ie chuntering sequencers and bleeps) into something rather scarier - 15 min. of atonality and female vocals over mad breakbeats on Are We Here, minimalist Nymanesque piano on Kein Trink Wasser, strange sub-Orbian gurglings on I Wish I Had Duck's Feet, thrashy Crass punk guitar bits on ??? (memory loss - what's that :) It's very I but not so much D; like some of the best bits of Black Dog, you probably need several more feet than I've got to dance to it - but what the hell. It's well worth getting, anyway (couldn't you tell from the tone of this review), 'cos it shows where the genre's going (I hope.) It was an underground release (no record label or credits), and looked like the cover to DSotM only with a white background behind the prism instead of black. The track listing was pretty much the same as DSotM, except i think the first track was a "new" title. i did not buy it ($25), or get a chance to listen to it (not that kind of store). I suspected it was breakbeats matched to the original tracks or something cheesey like that. does anyone have this? although my expectations are low, is it any good? is it straight out "Trance" in the conventional dance sense (not interesting for me), or more eclectic and spacey? did they do justice to "the great gig in the sky" ?? You don't realize the significance of this album. They have expanded their minds to the point where BPM's are no longer important. You do not need a beat to dance to these tracks, their talent flows beyond their drum machines. If you have heard about their appreances at Ravestock and at Glastonbury, you would understand. For a first album after a long period of electronic chastity, I would not recommend it, as the meanings and the emotions expressed in the music would be lost, even if you enjoyed Planet of the Shapes/Lush 3-1/Lush 3-2/Impact (The Earth is Burning)/Remind. They squirmed out of the bounds of the traditional Ambient House feel, and have created a sound which is distinctly Orbital. His description of the work habits of the ambient 'musicians' is probably dead on. But it's kind of beside the point; you can carefully craft shitty music, and you can bash out brilliance. MIDI, samplers, and sequencers are equalizers; they allow people without a lot of technical proficiency (keyboard chops) try and put what they hear in their heads on tape. Part of what's fun about making synth music is that it can suprise you. You pile up enough stuff and you can get lucky.
