How about "IDM"? Yeah, that's the ticket. "IDM".
Stands for "Insolent Detroit-centric Musos".
It appears our young friend Jason has forgotten a basic rule of Cyberspace.
That not everyone shares his particular set of Universal Coordinates - i.e.,
age/location/tendancies/close proximity to record sources/scene/etc. Walk a
mile in someone else's shoes.
I can *almost* relate to where he's coming from, as I was on that side of the
fence in rec.music.industrial a few years ago. It would be frustrating to want
to talk about Massenschimmer (sp?) 412 or Morthond (at the time) when all you'd
get might be a knowing nod from Mason Jones in return. Meanwhile you'd have to
wade through the Ministry and NIN posting flood. (Wait, that's still true (-:)
But on the other hand ...
My only reason for entering this fray is because I haven't seen anyone else
bring this point up: when you are involved with other people world-wide on a
computer mailing list or newsgroup, to a certain extent you *have* to expect a
sort of "lowest common denominator" - because otherwise you end up shouting in
outer space (or pissing in the wind). The nice thing about this list is that
the "LCD" is so g*dd*mn*d GOOD. If people like RDJ - who I've seen live twice
and who blew my brain into tiny fragments on both occasions, like nothing I've
ever heard before - are the "common denominator" on this list, then shit howdy
cowboy, it's a great ride. But if we're going to talk about LCDs, then onward:
For example, the few times I've made the trek all the way into deepest, darkest
Hollywood to Techno Row (a few stores in a square mile area of Melrose Ave.,
like Street Sounds, DMC, and Beat Non Stop) I've found quite a few white-label
12"ers that have wet my whistle. And I'm sure that if your world coordinates
were cartographed something like this:
- Young
- Spend most disposable income on recordings / raves / clubs
- Have easy access to record sources
- Spend considerable amount of time in stores, on a very frequent basis
... the result would be that you'd undoubtedly often walk home with veritable
cartloads of white label, no-information-please 12" slabs o' wax that would be
so hot off the presses that they'd drip trough your bag on the way home to the
ol' turntable. And that's just great. But don't expect to get on a world-wide
mailing list and expect that everyone else is going to be in the same position,
my young friend.
I wouldn't dare pretend to speak for anyone else, but I for one sure ain't in a
position at this point in my life to fit the above profile like a Maidenform.
Nowadays, going to Hollywood and Melrose in particular is fraught with peril; a
journey of 30 miles and 45 minutes by car for me, and driving in Hollywood is
such a nightmare that I despise it immensely. Essentially, it becomes A Major
Expedition. Furthermore, if I walked into almost any of said aforementioned
Techno palaces and bought half of what I'd like to buy, I'd walk out about
US$500 poorer ... and not only can I not afford that, but if I could, I have
other priorities at this point. (Thinks: $500 on records & CDs would nearly
pay for a round-trip fare to Amsterdam to catch those Drome/AFX and Biosphere
shows coming up. Hmmmn ... ah, for lack of spare ca$h :-( *Sigh* ... )
The Executive Summary is that I don't have the money to spend on this stuff
like I once did, and the stores are all (relatively) far away and therefore I
am lucky to get to them once every few *months*. I imagine for list dwellers
that aren't located anywhere near a megalopolis like Los Angeles, this kind of
situation is common, enforced by location or other factors.
The bottom line is that you can only talk about what you have and have heard,
and that's subject to all of the factors listed above. If that bothers you,
then create a LOCAL mailing list where you can pull rank talking about how you
managed to score that sole copy of the hot new white label that just came into
Joe's Bar & Grill & College & Techno Emporium yesterday. Otherwise, suck up
and Deal With It.
(Personally, I have more of a gripe with all the e.e. cummings wannabees that
can't find the Shift key than I do with the content here ... (-: )
