In the short time that I've been on idm, I've noticed that the focus seems to be on the "intelligent" side of the equation and not on the "dance" side of the equation. Maybe this has to do with the ratio of DJs to non-DJs. I thought I'd change the balance a little by posting some mini-reviews of tracks I consider intelligent AND danceable. Scoring: +3: buy this +2: probably worth buying +1: maybe worth buying, but listen to it first. 0: completely neutral. no regrets, but not excited -1: maybe not worth buying, but listen to it first. -2: probably not worth buying -3: don't buy this Edge #11 -- Varispeed EP (+2.5) An excellent five tracker with (as the name implies) tracks at a variety of speeds (roughly 125bpm to 170bpm). Styles range from trance to tribal to floor stomping hardcore. All tracks are well constructed, useful to mix with, and crowd pleasers to boot! Probably my favorite Edge release to date. Mike Ink -- Paradise City (dj ungle fever) (+2) Three tracks of experimental acid. The main track is a slowly varying acid storm with chopped up noise coming in every 16th note (a la jeff mills), making for a fast feel at moderate bpm. The dense sound comes from layer upon layer of sound, starting with the 16th note fill mentioned above and ending with twirling melody lines that spin on top of the mix. The b-sides are more stripped down affairs, with a kick on the bottom and a distorted 303 on top. They share the same hook, but one clocks in at around 140 while the other hits around 170. The Collective EP (Utensil 001) (+2) A four tracker of patient well-constructed techno from detroit. Most tracks clock in at around 125, with one clocking in at 131. My copy is prone to skip, unfortunately, so I haven't had a chance to use any of the tracks except for the terrence dixon track, which (fortunately) doesn't skip. The sound lies somewhere between dbx and UR. Gilgamesh -- Trescore (fragile/transmat) (+1.5) A beautiful seven minute trancer which starts off with an electronic whine and slowly builds to a crecendo of rhythmic synths. Useful for boosting the energy in a trance set. The b-side is pure ambient, i.e., no beats whatsoever. Nice to have around, but you may as well just pull out your old brian eno albums.

Ah! Finally this great lable gets mentioned on the list! However in this housey part of the world it's rather difficult to find so I've only managed to pick up A Scorpion's Dream and Complex 12"s, but they're definitely among the gems in my crate (nestled close to the Red Planets and esoteric UR stuff) Peace, Matt Corwine XLR8R Magazine, Seattle

I'm still wading through the stuff I bought at the weekend x-mix-3 triple pack 12 tracks Not recommended I'm afraid This is the kind of techno that seems to be favoured by club DJs at the moment: c135bpm, Kicks in a club, Sounds rather dull at home. I bought this on the back of x-mix-2, and the fact that this pack includes FUSE vs LFO - Loop. I'm, a bit of an LFO fan and missed this when available on promo. No doubt a copy of it would cost about as much as this LP. All the same I was disappointed. Track listing: Cal-Q-Lator - Dr Bradford Telephone receptionist intro seems unconnected to track Laurent Garnier - Astral Dreams (Speakers Mix) There are better tracks than this single on his LP Erik Van Den Broek - Ursa Major 7 K.Hand - Flashback This is based on Beltram's "Energy Flash" Barada - Glue FUSE vs LFO -Loop Speedy J - Evolution Probably the dullest Speedy J track I have heard Peelo - Neewa Scanner - Mass Observation Only very small snippets of scanned calls in this. One of the best tracks on the album Math-u-matics - Blue Nicole - A small path into a large ?? -oops didn't write this down. Major howler on the tracklisting, discs 1 and 3 are completely transposed. The sleeve and labels match the run-out info, but the tracks are switched. And some sides are cut off-centre, notably the one with the LFO track :( Might take it back. No doubt there will be an interesting video of this compilation, however the tracks are rather disapointing imo. System 01 Take My Soul Tresor 12" Fairly unremarkable trancer with "Take my Soul" and more prominent "Give it to me" female vocal samples, plus longer Sun Electric mix as flip, plus "Mind Sensations" which uses System 01's own old "Drugs Work" sample, plus quotes about kids making money from selling drugs. Hmmm. OK for £1.99 anyway Goldie presents Metalheads Inner City Life. ffrr 12" Very clean tight jungle (drum+bass?) track with soulful vocals. Should prove to be a bit of a grower. Resistance D Inexhaustibility EP Harthouse 5 track double EP DarkSide Skyline Throm 3 Rezolution Spacewalk Standout track is Throm 3 - understated acid and a sense of foreboding which pervades many of these tracks is strong in this one. All very well produced - a sound which is both energetic and danceable, yet listenable and engaging for home use. Next up: Beaumont Hannant "Sculptured" plus "Ormeau" singles. Syn 05 12" from Pete Namlook J ^

Fax. first Fax 12" I've seen, apart from a collector pack for megaquids a few months back. I know there were lots yonks ago, but I never saw them. btw I should have said Syn 5, not Syn 05 Well here's my "mini review", except that I don't have any notes. I con't remember the title, but it's two 15 minute tracks If you like Pete Namlook generally you'll like this. It's a mixture of spacey ambient (an old Sequential track springs to mind) and the kind of brash trance that he has done before. My mind has gone blank for the CD names/titles, but it's like the Trip to Mars/ Trip to Earth/ Atmosphere processor/ whatever else stuff that I have on a CD double pack, one track of which turned up on TEX (vol 2 I think) It is _not_ like the Syn "Painamplifier" track off Fax compilation 4 J ^

i don't know where james buys his records but any decent record shop should let you hear stuff before purchase-you can't just go on reviews and recommendations as all views are subjective. it can be hard to form an opinion and hence make a decision about a tune when its being skimmed through by a grumpy record assistant, but i tend to find my judgement in shops is pretty accurate after listening to new records at home. nevermind you can always take them to vinyl exchange just a thought matt

I shop at a variety of places. Some of these are very good and in fact the shop where I bought X-mix-3 I was there over an hour listening to loads of stuff. I unfortunately made a wrong decision in buying this LP without bothering to listen. The System 01 12" came from a small shop without listening facilities and I decided to risk it for #1.99, not having seen it elsewhere

Yes mine too. My general rule is "Always listen to stuff before buying it unless either: a) its very cheap (and on a reputable label, or something I read about) b) it's on WARP But sometimes my addiction gets the better of me and I just go and buy. This can result in the situation above. J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - jamess@firefox.co.uk

Freescha : Kids Fill the Floor Lush. All the way through. Just beautiful. Pilote : Doitnowman The first few tracks are great, then it sort of falls off. Adult. : Recusitation Yes, this is a lot of fun. Chris Clark : Clarence Park There are a few really nice songs here, I'm talking about the melodic ones. Every once in a while I feel compelled to share what I have been enjoying. Safety Scissors : Parts Water : Plug Research Not quite what I expected, but really fun nonetheless. I'm really getting into IDM(???) with lyrics lately. A few songs on this album have playful rhymes and verses. Anyway, it is fun. Pretty Boy Crossover : The Building and Formation : Surgery Fun, good, cool... interesting. (damn I write informative reviews, huh?) Takeshi Muto : Expect More From A Past Life : Schematic So, I have most if not all of these tracks on records, but it is a completely different story to be able to listen to them at work on earphones. Anyone else think that the Otto Von Scirach album on Schematic isn't very good? How is the VIM! cd on Surgery? Anyone? I am not really into the 8bit video game sound, so I stayed away. -Hess --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Anyone else think that the Otto Von Scirach album on Schematic isn't very good? I saw otto live 2 winter conferences ago in miami, and his music was very different than his album turned out to be. He had the bogdan raczynzki flavor, I heard mostly jungle beats. Yes his album doesn't reflect this. I really though of him as the next bogdan, I don't know why it changed...oh well, maybe the next. ps. the best thing about 8000bc is the 7 inch. otomi;)
