While in my friendly neighbourhood record shop (Tempest in Birmingham) I saw all our favourite releases listed under "Acid House". I don't want to start a pointless debate on pigeonholing music, but I wondered how other people describe IDM. When people ask me what sort of music I'm into, I usually say "progressive dance" or "intelligent dance". This draws a blank look so I suggest some names eg Black Dog, FSOL, Underworld etc. This adds to the confusion, so in desperation I describe it as "intelligent techno". The person I'm talking to then usually grins and says "Oh, techno techno techno techno" (a crap line from a 2 untalented song for those that don't know) and gets completely the wrong idea. I admit that the vast majority of my friends are into Mainstream pap and wouldn't know an Aphex Twin release if it bit them :) But there has to be a name for our music that people not into the scene can understand - or is IDM stil too underground? awaiting your thoughts Ade ;)

Arrghh. This has happened to me at least 10 times. I am now serving a life sentence for the apparently motiveless serial killing of ten friends..... :) greg 3 0 3

RE>What's in a name? i just call it "electronic dance music." that covers techno, IDM, house, ambient house, the lot... it's also a fairly neutral term. (mainly because nobody uses it except me.) /jon

Well, actually me & my friends have been using it for quite a while, especially before "idm" emerged. If you get the chance, try asking Cari "Shapechanger" Lekebusch what he would call his music and you'll see... Actually I think it describes my taste better than "idm", "intelligent" isn't very easy to define...and it certainly isn't _neutral_... "EDM" covers the whole range of dancemusic that I like, even back to electro... ...while I tend to associate "IDM" mostly with AI, AFX, FSOL and that bunch... ...and I _do_ listen to other stuff also Fredrik
