Hello everybody, Here are reviews of some new CDs i recently bought. The first ones are 2 new Warp releases and the recycled Plastikman CD. WAP 44CD - Autechre - Basscad,EP (Basscadetmxs) - Warp records CD single tracks: 0,01 Bcdtmx 410 secs 0,02 Beaumonthannanttwomx 493 secs 0,03 Seefeelmx 410 secs 0,04 Tazmx 416 secs 0,05 Basscadubmx 584 secs This is the CD version of a 3x10" boxed singleset. Missing on this CD are: Basscadoublemx & Beaumont Hannant's 12/4cadetmx. This is a collection of some remixes of Basscadet (as you might have guessed already), a track off 'Incunabula'. The first thing i thought when i saw this record was: why didn't they release some new tracks instead of recycling ;-) this track again. The original was already on 'Artificial Intelligence I' almost one and a half year ago! Well, the first remix is a bit boring really so we skip to the second remix which is by Beaumont Hannant. Mr. Hannant, who already released some _brilliant_ records himself (expect a new CD called 'Texturology' very soon!), uses only the wavesequence of the original and adds an Aphex-stylee beat and a beautiful strings melody. It's a bit empty but it works. The third remix is by Richard James' friends Seefeel, a guitar-band. (what's a guitar i hear you ask). This remix is quite ironic: a guitarband remixing an electronic band, it used to be the other way around. Seefeel also use the wavesequence and not much else of the original. It's got the typical Seefeel 'long-distance' guitar-sounds with lots of reverb 'n' delay. Unfortunatly it's a bit too long while too little happens. 0,04 Is IMHO together with together with 0,02 the best reworking of 'Basscadet'. The rhythmtrack is a kind of distorted 'Black Dog'-style rhythm and again we hear some beautiful strings. Track 5 is a dub version as the title already suggests. It's the most 'ambient' track on this CD. It's very nice for about 3 and a half minutes. A message for all the Dutch Autechre-fans: Wednesday they'll play at the Mazzo in Amsterdam. WAP 45CD - Seefeel - Starethrough EP - Warp CD single tracks: Starethrough 7m22 Air-eyes 5m31 Spangle 7m15 Lux1 4m26 This is the first release of Seefeel on Warp. It's also the first release on Warp with guitars on _all_ the tracks. I must say i didn't really expect very much from this, but it's actually quite good. Seefeel make a kind of ambient music with guitars and some samples. They already released 2 (?) EPs and a full-length (?) CD. Richard James (who?) remixed one of their tracks and he even DJed at their live-shows, but i guess you know this already. I especially like track 1, which has a slight reggae-feel to it, and track 4, which almost could have been on SAWII. If you close your eyes while listening to it, you'll expect to be on some distant planet when you open them again. The other two tracks are very good too, but track 3 is just a bit too long. Although Seefeel use guitars, it's not strange to see them on Warp. Their sounds are so processed with reverb and delay they don't even sound like guitars anymore sometimes. A nice and dreamy EP. Both Warp CDs again have beautiful sleeve-designs by The Designers Republic again. NoMu 30 - Plastikman - Recycled Plastik - Novamote records CD-EP tracks: Krakpot Elektrostatik Spaz Gak Remix Naturalistik Spastik Wellllll, a lot has been said about this already on idm, so i'll keep this review short. I must say i quite like the Plastikman-releases thus far. I really enjoy the hypnotic and very percussive work-outs of Ritchie Hawtin, They're great for dancing _and_ listening. The Atmosphere in the tracks is really good. But, as has been said before, the 2 new songs on this CD are not Plastikman's best. I guess they were some leftovers Novamute could't resist to release. It's nice to have the other tracks on CD though. All right. This were my first ever reviews. I hope you enjoyed them. If you have comments, please mail them to me. Thank you and goodbye. -- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hans Veneman ! ! Damrif 15 ! veneman@tv99ad.hacktic.nl ! 8224 AE Lelystad ! ! I'm getting interested in this Hannant guy. What are the titles of the /brilliant/ records in your opinion? I get the idea he sounds like Aphex Twin, but with more melodies??

It doesn't matter if you use synths, guitars, or even knives and forks. The resulting sounds, that's what only matters. Oh, btw, you should check out Seefeel's "Quique" album, out on Too Pure. Mucho dronings... the last piece 'Signals' could be on saw.ii. Greets, Lawrence PS. Has anyone heard the new Mu-Ziq EP on R&S already?? Review plz! ;) ---

I don't think he sounds anything like the Aphex Twin. he sounds like Beaumont Hannant :) He has quite an original sound.

Yes, last week. I'll have to wait two more days, before it's here in Holland again via import... And hope no-one snatches it away before I do! I've heard that "Phi*1700[u/v]" was on it, or even the title of the EP... Greets, Lawrence ---

Beaumont Hannant sounds quite different from the Aphex Twin. His stuff is very varied. From dark ambient to experimental hardcore. He uses all kinds of sounds, including some 'real-instrument' sounds like (bass)guitars and accoustic drums. A lot of his songs also have a 'live-played' feel to it. I guess he's a good technician as well as a good musician as well as a good composer. To get a good impression you'll just have to listen to his records: 12" - Tastes and Textures EP Volume One - GPR Records - GENP(X)14 CD - Basic Data Manipulation Tastes and Textures*Vol. 2 - GPR Records - GPR CD2 12" - Tastes and Textures Vol-3 - GPR Records - GENP(X)21 (CD - Texturolgy - GPR Records - GPR CD4(?)) I heard the songs on these records aren't even Hannant's best because of some trouble with GPR. (?)

Very true. Just listen to Hannant. Unfortunatly most guitar-players like to do boring things with their instruments. One of the few 'rock'bands i still like are Sonic Youth. There are a couple of great tracks on that release ("Macbeth", particularly), but as much as I love Sonic Youth, for the most part it's just them screwing around. I'm thinking something more along the lines of some really spooky dark ambience... why don't you make a little suggestion to those "former industrialist" friends of yours (wink!)

I specifically mentioned the Feelies because I think that they're later albums (_Only Life_ in particular) are a great example of how truly trancy rock can be in capable hands -- if you don't believe me, check out "Away", "For Awhile", or "The Undertow" from that record. ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com freeke robot luv

Yeah, what about a dark techno act but instead of being `faceless techno bollocks' we should have someone with the stage presence of Henry Rollins. Now that _would_ be scary . . .

Right, me too. I've been longing for this for a LONG, LONG time now, and still no-one has done such a thing 'properly'. That's why I've started to do it myself, I guess. :-) The ones who got closest for now are Mu-Ziq though, imho.

Great, great, great. Just the thing I was looking for. Techno being made with non-electronic instruments..

This was the first time I went to Mazzo. There were only about 100 people. Which was just enough because the Mazzo is /very/ small. Autechre started a bit dull, but after the third piece they did they got the crowd moving. That was when they used sortof distorted sounds and got wicked! I was amazed, because normally people like either the cleancut Orb-alike sounds or the BOEM-BOEM-BOEM-BOEM-thingies to dance onto, but this crowd digged the more experimental stuff. Amazing. Afterwards I talked to Sean Booth from Autechre to get some good tips on making music. When I explained to him what I wanted to do he mentioned "Hannant". Coincidence or not? ;-) He is a big fan of Hannant; Hannant has done remixes on the triple 10" Autechre-box that is out now.

I know a lot more 'rock'bands that are definitely not boring (to me anyway). My Bloody Valentine for example. I'm sure a lot of idm'ers would dig their "Loveless"album, or the amazing "Glider" (on "Glider"EP). Greets, Lawrence ---

There is one mix of it that absolutely captivates me... can't remember the name of the mix though. The album version is pretty good in itself. -H- -- ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Howard Berkey howard@netcom.com Eat at C-Ko's ...........................................................................

Beaumont Hannant only uses the sounds of accoustic instruments. I guess he's got the usual synth/sampler set-up.

I also really like Tackhead, especially their earlier stuff. 3 Really good musicians, with a brilliant technician (Adrian Sherwood). Most records on On-U Sound are very good btw. I think a lot of idm'ers will like this too. I recently heard a rumor that Adrian Sherwood is recording with Andy Weatherall at the moment. There's Basic Data Manipulation 1 and 2 on CD and vinyl respectively, apparently with separate track lineups, and the Tastes and Textures EPs on GPR. I have Vol. 3 and IMHO it's really good but it doesn't stand out from all the other GPR releases I have... It's good clean electronic music but I think the Aphex Twin comparisons are going a bit too far... Matt

Nope, "Crystel" and "The Egg" (which became "Eggshell" on 'Incunabula') were on AI1. C. -- (Puevf.Uvyxre) pfcbg@argpbz.pbz
