Re: Hawtin. I thought much the same as you two. , however, Krakpot is good for mixing, as you can just leave it going for ages with another track, thus lending the other track a bit of a harder edge. V. boring to listen to neat though. Is the p.man lp like tyhis al the way thru?. I heard 'helicopter' or whatever. now this seemed too bare to listen to, and not even useful for miixin. Does anyone feel like saving mr Hawtins' rep? Chris.

Ya! Nice for a backing track... I didn't think of that! I usually keep boring records for that purpose... I suppose I'll keep it now! -djkc

Exactly! You can't possibly play the songs by themselves--they're much too minimal to work well as dance tracks. But when layered over other songs (preferably old acid house tracks), Hawtin's tracks really add a new dimension to the mix. Lee btw, all you unbelievers should check out the Platikman new "acid house" remix of Robot Man's "Do Da Doo." You'll be converted.

I've got the Plus8 2x12", it's not described as an LP. And I like it too. It's certainly minimal, I hated it at first (I like the Hawtin of old, Technarchy, Substance Abuse, Revelation 928 etc), but like all my favorite records, it grew on me. It's music you really have to listen to in detail, subtle acid lines build, grow and die away. Smak has top be my pick of the bunch. Mind you, this is not so subtle! greg 3 0 3

I don't know about saving his rep, but I rather like the Plastikman cd. It's structured very nicely as a listenable record- I don't think of it as music for dancing: even though it's not, I tend to think of the record as being more on the ambient side, but heavier and more energetic. Some of the bass lines are really incredible and full, and the way he works sound around the rhythms is sparse but very rich. I find that the music is somehow mysterious sounding. Krakpot doesn't really sound to me that much like the Plastikman cd. As for the Spastik 12", I haven't heard that mix, but I've heard James Christian and Junior Vasquez spin the lp version of Spastik to a roomful of dancers seriously digging what they're hearing, so he's obviously doing something right. It is metronomic, but the way those fat bass lines kick in on a good sound system really propels you. Helikopter is a very different sounding remix of Spastik, and I don't think that it would stand up on the dance floor as well as Spastik does. Phil Z

John sent me this a while back and I promptly gave it away! (Don't tell John).. It sounds way too much like a euro-disco import throw-away, i.e. no groove.. What I did really like was the one-sided 12" that came out a while back.. well wicked! ** ******** ********** ********** ******** **Born.Under.A.Rhyming.Planet. +8 Records, Chicago, Il.

I guess it must be a regional thang. I thought that the one-sided 12" sounded bland and unoriginal while the "acid house" remix was just that: blurpy bass with a building acid track reminiscent of old Chicago and Detroit acid house that leans a little towards the dark side. Are you sure you got the right track? About 10 minutes long, with an extended acid breakdown near the end? This release is one sided also in the sense that the same song is pressed on both sides. Lee
