I really have to say that the two unreleased tracs on this CD are some of the worst drivel I've heard Rich do.. We popped the CD in during on our shows and resorted to hitting the trac forward button a couple of times to save the listeners from the nonsense.. Yep! I have the Elektrostatik/Krakpot 12" and it's like a METRONOME! One beat - thump thump thump - over and over! There's lots of filtering of subtle acid-like sounds, and some drummachine percussions on one track atleast, but there's NO STRUCTURE to the tracks...just a beat, over and over. Either he meant to do this, making minimal tracks which leave much to the listener's imagination (to make sense of them), or I'll just have to say: How the hell did Richie Hawtin ever make a name for himself? I've heard Blob, also. The rhythm & bassline here is groovy, but minimal and repititous like the other tracks. I think Plastikman is overhyped if any magazine raves about him. It's possible that my grandma could make better techno... -djkc

I am glad to hear someone else say this, since all I have heard are positive things about Plastikman. I got the Spastik 12" and thought it was total crap, and I had to review the Krakpot 12" this morning and metronome was the first word that popped into my head. Boring. My review reflects that, so keep an eye out for it in URB. To all of those who think that Plastikman is the Next Big Way Overhyped thing, all I have to say is: acid house. These tracks did absolutely nothing for me until I got the chance to hear them on a big soundsystem. Especially the various incarnations of Plasticine, where the subtle little tweaky acid bits do all sorts of indescribable things to my head. Most of Hawtin's stuff really doesn't work as listening fare, but goes over really well when you're mixing a set of the straight-up old school acid house (Maurice, Phuture, etc.). Then it absolutely SLAMS. just a thought, ozy

Maybe I should of clarified my option better, but I really like Krakpot and the Gak remix.. Both are good crowd movers, hardly listening music.. What I thought was garbage were the unreleased tracs on the CD.. I use the full- length as a sedative when I want to go to bed, but the Gak remix has been described as sounding like a Dj Hype trac by my friends, and I will continue to work it on dancefloors.. Perhaps you should try *mixing* with them ;-) I'll agree that spastic can be a bit hard to appreciate at times--I always want a third deck for that song, but krakpot is an absolute minimalist masterpeice; I've seen it just *explode* dancefloors. Ditto Electrostatic and Helicopter. These three songs can be put on top of almost anything tweeky with excellent results in addition to being great transitional tunes. And of course lets not forget about Plasticine and Plasticity both of which reside *properly* on the recent idm top 25. Also there's a whole range of what I call fairly deep trance that achieve's its effect not so much with layered synths etc. but via long and constant repetition; much of the basic channel material, especially 4 & 5, work this way. It's hard to appreciate when you're shopping disks quickly with headphones but smoke a j and let these tracks breathe and you'll go deep pretty reliably. take it deeply ethan
