it's a physics thing. classical physics predicted a certain model of black body radiation which was observed to be incorrect for the ultraviolet area of the spectrum. nobody could figure it out, hence it became an ultraviolet catastrophe. max planck solved it when he invented quantum mechanics. i'm sure i've got one or more important details wrong (as usual). mike will probably follow this one up correcting me... :)

Heh, another "Prodigy" "Opus III" "Sequential" "*303*" etc,etc... ^\ /^ | notice wildcard! :) Jon, have you reviewed the new Violet Arcana, yet? It's 68000 (Jeremy Wells) and some other dude... Wells is on the net at netcom...with his some samples on FTP too. It's supposed to be "a cross between Future Sound of London and This Mortal Coil" but when I listened to the sample, it reminded me of T42 or Information Society!! Is that a joke or what? FSOL+4AD=VA? NOT! -DJKC

I haven't heard VA, so I can't comment on it, but I can say that Jeremy's "Technocolor" album is still one of my favorite albums, and it's a clear level above 90% of the stuff being made today. Anyone who likes complex analogue techno (not just someone hitting two buttons on a 303 and 909) should check it out. just a contrasting opinion: i think "technocolor" is completely lame, repetitive, unimaginative, badly programmed, badly written, badly conceived, badly executed and just plain Not Good. his track on "50 years of sunshine" is actually pretty good though, so i wouldn't totally write him off just based on "technocolor". The ultraviolet catastrophe was a name for the mismatch between the predicted curve for a black body radiator and the actual curve. One theory had the curve going upwards in the UV wavelengths, whereas a true black body radiator maxes out. The resolution to the equation that predicted black body radiation was done by Max Planck who modified the equation by twiddling with it mathematically until it worked out. Basically, if you (incorrectly) assume that radiation is a continuous stream of energy, you can prove that the energy that a black box emits at a certain frequency is proportional to the frequency. One consequence of this is that you can then prove that a black box emits an infinite amount of energy. This is, of course false, and empirical measurements showed that once you got to the ultraviolet band of radiation, the energy levels started to decrease as the frequencies got higher. The theory's contradiction with the observed behavior called the Ultraviolet Catastrophe. The Ultraviolet Catastrophe is solved by assuming that radiation is not a continuous stream of energy, but instead travels in discrete units, having some wavelike properties and some particle-like properties.

Ditto here kids. I didn't want Jon to look like an old grump in this case, so I'm backing him on it. I was really disappointed with "Technocolor" and ended up giving it away.
