For want of a better term, I'd have to describe Ozric Tentacles as "progressive rock" or "art rock", but they're really nowhere near as annoying as most of the bands who do that sort of thing. They do spaced out rock tunes with freaky/jazzy/spacey influences -- a reference point might be Steve Hillage sitting in on a performance of Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" as performed by the Mothers of Invention. | Dave Walker, Detroit Art Services (DAS) -- marmoset@msen.com | | | | Without chemicals, life itself would be impossible. |

anybody on this list who wants to come to a small pre-ambient get together at my place (reasonably large space, buckets of IDM to listen to, gawk at, geek out over) is welcome - send me private email for details. my roommate is attempting to get Mixmaster Morris himself to drop by the house prior to the gig. it could happen.

174 King Street is a nice little venue. Most of the problems that Brian has mentioned have gone away lately. Or at least they haven't been as noticeable. Anyway, one of the persons involved with the party told me it's going to be pretty cool - they are going to carpet the entire place and provide beanbags so you can chill in style.

Ozric Tentacles are: progressive rock, space music, reggae, trance and lots of other stuff all mixed up together. Heavily sequenced synth stuff trades off against huge rock guitar solos. The band goes into a total Hillage-esque space out only to suddenly drop into a spliffy reggae groove and then into Motorhead style speed metal for a few minutes. If you can't stand any sort of rock music, you won't like it. I love it. Try the two domestic issues (cheap!) first: "Strangeitude" (title track wouldn't be out of place on an Orb album) and "Jurassic Shift." Strange...5 minutes after reading this post, 'liquid air (bionaut remix)' is read by my CD player, sent through my amp, and launched through the air by my speakers to my ears! So I look at the CD it came on ("the age of trance - the new generation of intelligent dancemusic", on DANCE POOL 474208-2) and find other BLUE label artists: mike ink - "the universe" the bionaut - "octopus"

Nope, sorry! But, I'll be posting a LOT of my CDs for sale soon, including "the age of trance" 2CD, with lots of IDM (it even says so on the cover!) -djkc

On Mar 20, 9:53pm, you proclaimed: } any desicions on where to meet before dreamfishing on the 26th...i'm told } there's a FMrave that nite too/..how many are going? I'm not sure my plans for that night so any semi-official gathering at my place is on hold, but I'll let people know as things come together. } what's up w/ the space its being held at, i know its 21+, but is it at some } cheez venue w/ hay & peanuts on the floor or what(i think that would kinda } add personally). Mr.Behlendorf doesn't seem to like it very much... 174 King St. is a hallmark in the SF club/rave scene, having been one of the first places for parties like Toon Town and Carefree. It's always been 21+, but as of the past two years or so they had been really unpermissive in terms of letting underage people sneak in (probably more the fault of local police politics than anything else - it butts up against new edge-of-downtown yuppie developments these days). Recent management has also really pushed alcohol sales as a main way of generating revenue, to the point of shutting down a party some friends of mine were trying to throw because no one was giving the bar their business. Anyways, I personally feel that the 21+ barrier is a very divisive force in the scene here, and just because of my personal politics I don't want to try and give my business to places that support it. I will be 21 on the 30th of this month, but even after having crossed that barrier I won't suddenly decide 21+ is okay. I do understand that local city politics makes having all-night parties be 18+ a very difficult proposition, so if a club is 21+ but has a policy of allowing under 21's in under certain conditions (like at 1015 Folsom way back when they would let 18+ in after 2am when the bar closed) or is actively trying to get their 18+ license, then I don't mind going to them. So anyways, this is what I recommend and might possibly do myself: go to the 3rd anniversary full moon on Saturday night (don't know where it'll be) and go to the Eighth House party where Mixmaster Morris and Laura and Jonah will be spinning at on Monday night (9pm-3am, Morris spinning in the ambient room for 3 hours, Laura and Jonah doing 90 minute sets, other techno DJ's). Of course, if you are traveling from out of town and can only be in for the weekend, and are really interested in seeing Pete Namlook, then go to the Saturday night party. Brian

Unfortunately this is a big factor for me, and for a couple of the people coming up from LA for the party. Even if they were officially 21+ and cool with 18+, I'd go. And if more people felt as strongly as I did about this, then I think clubs would re-evaluate their position. There is no legal reason they have to be 21+ to go all night - those "cabaret license laws" the city tried to use to shut down raves awhile ago have been struct down/ They just need to get the right permits, and that costs a little extra money and hassle. They could still serve as much alcohol as they wanted. Not trying to get the right permits is tantamount to active age discrimination, which I'm just not cool with. Brian

no, it's not 18+ yet. i was talking about the "pushing alcohol to the exclusion of all else" thing... /jon
