Quite a lot of mail has been on the subject of styles of music that cross with idm. I have my doubts about shoegazers, but has anybody heard of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra? They are a *superb* bunch of musicians and their music is a mixture of ambient and minimalist (that word again) classical. You couldn't really dance to it, but it's genuine mood music (sort of Eno with a 'cello) cheers, Ade

yeah, i *love* Penguin Cafe Orchestra, especially the album "Broadcasting From Home." the only even slightly tangential IDM relationship i can think of is that Ryuichi Sakamoto co-wrote one of the tracks on that disc! :) and while we're on the subject of not-quite-IDM, may I heartily suggest that y'all check out "(in pursuit of) Shashamane Land" by African Head Charge... tribal rhythms mixed with reggaeish bass and trippy guitar, and some mad mental percussion. One track actually reaches dance floor tempo and I will *definitely* be including it on my mix tapes in the future!
