In case any of you were wondering how my gig went last Saturday here`s an
account...
I hit the club with an impressive amount of equipment: thanks to Chris for
helping out by lending me some machines. The rehearsal went on too long but
that was OK because the club opened late anyway.
Eric DJed before we came on (we had the room from 11pm-1am) at about 12.15.
Eric`s set of minimalist ambience blended well into the start of our set as
I opened with a very ambient track of my own ("Guru") which sounded much
more epic than usual thanks to Chris` Juno 106. I followed that with Jupiter
II, another ambient track, and held the crowd`s attention with clever
basslines in both tracks. It was during Jupiter III that Chris came up with
a noise on his 101 that sounded like an earthquake: I was playing keyboard
when the room started shaking and people started looking worried. It took me
a while to figure out that it was us, then I looked at the video projection
screen and they had put up a film of this volcano erupting to fit the music!
It worked really well.
The next track, Periphery, was when the beat came in. Some people said
that it reminded them of the Orb because the beat was a skanking dubby type
beat, and apparently it was pretty effective. After that things got more
techno-oriented.
"From the Sea to the Stars" builds up really nicely, and the chords sounded
marvellous. "Planet to Planet" had been remixed and sounded pretty damn good
to me. I just freaked out and soloed all the way through that track because
the chords were sounding so damn excellent, and the bass drum was kicking.
Then I looked at my watch and I only had 4 minutes left on stage; the time
had flown by! I started my last track which is pretty RedPlanet-esque and
percussive and that sounded pretty good although I couldn`t play along with
it (too fast).
So all in all the gig sounded amazing! The ambient-to-techno transition
really worked, we even got a few people dancing by the end of the set! And I
was told that a few Club Dog people were there, and thought I was pretty
good so I`m going to chase that up...
We tried to record the gig too, but Chris set the levels way too high on
the DAT and it came out all distorted, which pisses me off but I`ll have to
deal with it...
Kinetic Illusion, hot shit!
