This is a bit of a late reply to the acoustics
thread from before, but I was just thinking
of this yesterday.
Somebody mentioned that notes actually seemed
to change pitch depending on where the
headphones were located; I think this is
because most sounds have really messy shapes
in frequency domain (in other words the sound
of a violin isn't just one frequency but a
large combination of frequencies and overtones).
So when the position of the speaker or headphone
changes you have a new configuration which
tends to amplify or attenuate certain
frequencies, and this seems to change the
tones. This could be completely wrong, but
you could also test it - by playing a pure tone
(just a sine wave) through the headphones and
moving them around, if my idea is right the
loudness should change but the tone should not.

aronne
