Was wondering if anybody could give me a good description of this that doesn't sound like one of those press releases where they manage to not even mention the music (i.e. everything) - maybe even a Real Audio link or something. Also any other Omit recommendations are welcome. The bulk of the Omit output is comprised of a churning, drone miasma presented with a liberal dollop of alien vibes (strongly suggested by the otherwordly artwork). Heavy-lidded effects and copious use of delay seem to suggest a narcotic rendition of an imagined Martian swamp. Earliest available recordings (_Intromit_) were veritable studies in how to use effects to transform household appliances into cosmic sound automatons and subsequent recordings show advancement by leaps and bounds. Most of the releases are self-released cassettes (just shy of ten, last I checked) and are/were available from Anomalous records for pennies (about the price of blanks + postage from NZ)- I haven't seen any listed recently, so I don't know if any/all parties involved are taking a breather or what. Comparable to: the sixties work of Pauline Oliveros, who pioneered the tape-delay system that Brian Eno ripped off/watered down and used to make his elevator music classic _Discreet Music_. See CDs on Paradigm and especially Pogus Productions (Alien Bog/Beautiful Soop) and approach her recent, new-agey work with caution. The 2CS set _Ionospheres_ is also pretty great. I've not been a fan of his collabs (the Dust/Omit CD on Corpus Hermeticum was particularly unimpressive), so perhaps diving right in with _Quad_ is the right move. -rob np- second disc of IOSS (Ios Smolders) 2 CD-R set of old school concrete. Omit is a clinton Williams from New Zealand... His music is a kind of harsh lo-fi electronica with lots off selfbuild electronica. The music is something between traditional ambient and Musique concrete mostly very dark. The Quad cd box is a reissue from a dble tape. He released a dozen tapes which are still all available though himself or some mailorders (like Fisheye Uk). The cd box is sold out... was an edition of 700 and will not be repressed. Most of the artwork from Omit is exhalirating... Most of his work is very consistent allthough his early works did throw in some guitarexperiments... there's another cd out on Corpus which is "Interior Desolution"... Also check out his Dust/Omit colloboration on the same label. He also appears on several 7", but realy legendary for packaging and musicwise is his own dble 7" Lathe Cut: "Point Zero" and the follow up of this one which is also a Lathe Cut. I highly recommend Omit to anybody who isn't afraid to discover new sounds in electronica... He's one of those few guys who does what he does regardless the time he's liviing in. He doesn't have e-mail, fax or anything... Just write him a nice letter and ask what is still available from his lesser known works... johan -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: AeOtaku@aol.com <AeOtaku@aol.com> Aan: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Datum: vrijdag 7 januari 2000 7:16 Onderwerp: (idm) Omit: Quad 3CD

I have only heard one of his cassette releases, once, and several years back so my impressions are pretty patchy. It was definitely very low-fi and very concrete-y (ie. lots of found sounds mashed together). I'd thought it was going to be a massive wall of noise, with everything rammed really loudly in the front of the mix, but, well, it wasn't. As has been said, this CD is supposed to be out of print. However, I do notice that Cranium Records (who are in NZ) list it on their site, with a "we'll try and find this for you" type note attached. That store is mainly focussed on prog rock and so on, but does have some things more up this alley. At any rate, if putting pen to paper seems stressful, you can email Cranium and enquire. ;) IME the guy there is really good (whatever his taste in music ;) and a friend informs me he does heaps of overseas stuff. http://www.cranium.co.nz It's funny reading comments about how unknown Omit is in his own country, as if people have been hesitant to acknowledge his widely distributed efforts. But, jeez, he lives just outside of a town of maybe 20 000 people, bunging out home made cassettes of noise collages. As with everyone remotely associated with the Corpus Hermeticum label, he's made a wilful attempt to avoid being "discovered" here. ive got that 3cd boxed set thing. its ltd to 500 copies,so if its for sale somewhere, get it. im hopeless at describing music. its mainly unsettling on the whole, then theres delicious bits that pop = out of nowhere to startle you with.......normalness! its a very isolated sound he has, which isnt surprising when everyone = else in NZ is either bunjee jumping, scaring sheep or busy moving = elsewhere!(sorryNZers, but it's true, and you know it) strange lad. there was a review in the wire of this set a long time ago. www.dfuse.com/thewire/ might be on there, might not.cant be arsed to look. theres a slight resemblance to david shea, with less melody, and more = paranoia,if thats any help? col
