Briefly see my viewpoint on the Flying high / drugs agrument if you will: It is (blatantly) obvious that dance music & culture ( house, techno & idm alike ) is heavily drugs orientated. For those who choose to indulge, recreational drug popping can modify / enhance the perception, thus in particular listening to music while off your head is a unique experience. - And goes without saying, a desirable one! Surely rather than dissmissing this experience on the grounds that it is 'not smart' you should weigh up the pros + cons; is above vs. risk of long term damage to health and due to illegality. Myself, I try to maintain a balance, all things in moderation, and lots of it! I often hear people dissmissing techno / idm by claiming that 'its only any good if your off your trolley isn't it? ': My response to this is that rather than a listener needing to take loads of drugs and get totally out of control to enjoy the music, he/she is able to enjoy drug related experiences that the composer is relating to , without personally indulging. For some people. :)

Not necessarily the case: much IDM isn't all that drug-related. Some of it definitely is, but drugs are more a part of the rave culture and atmosphere than the music itself. Some techno composers don't take drugs; Moby is of course the obvious example, and some of his stuff is certainly out there as much as the 24-7 stoner's. Personally, to me IDM is generally less the type of music that you need to be whacked out to listen to, whereas about half the standard techno/rave/gabber/etc certainly gains alot with the aid of chemicals, for most people. Some of us are quite chemically imbalanced to begin with :-) - Dan |=|=|=|=\=|=\=|=\=|=\=|=\=|=/=|=/=|=/=|=/=|=|=|=|-------------------------- The 8-BIt Collective - Transmission 23 - edrone dan nicholson, Clonor the Other - Finnish Techno Zyndicate 8bit@vlad.bowker.com -=>ICBM volume one available soon!<=- moddan@vlad.bowker.com "This message has been sent out - did you originate it?"
