I thought I'd throw my two cents' worth into to the above two
charming threads, but first: I bought the TVT reissue of Analogue
Bubblebath today, and "EnTrance To Exit" COMPLETELY SCRAPES MY SKULL
CLEAN. It's everything I ever liked about "rave" music plus a whole
hell of a lot more. Yikes! Aphex's early stuff still tweaks me really
hard. I'm really hoping that Sonic Bubblegum is Digeridoo, Xylem Tube,
plus maybe some Joyrex stuff. That'd be pretty damn cool.
As regards the roots of IDM, I present a schematic:

IDM
Feel free to add lines where you think they need to go. If I
filled the whole damn thing in it'd be illegible. And I don't even
care to guess where IDM is going to go next.
As far as music with high emotional content goes, my favorite
is still probably the various mixes of Spooky's "Little Bullet" (with
part one of the album mix and the Dum Dum mix probably taking the
lead). Other stuff that gets me going:
Good chunks of SAW and AB3
The Outersanctum compilation
Anything by Black Dog, but especially "Cost I"
Vainquer - Lyot (spare but soulful in its straight-up techno way)
Age of Love
LFO's "Groovy Distortion"
Most of Severed Heads' melodic stuff.
Not too specific, but I think I own a lot of emotional, as
well as intelligent, dance music.
