The first music I got into was hip-hop, when I was about 12 or 13,
especially Public Enemy who I used to listen to all the time. When I was
about 15 I started making music on computer, thinking that I would make
completely original music, that would sound like no-one had ever heard
before. I was trying to make alien music or something, and I played a track
to someone who said "That sounds like the Orb". "Who??" I said. So I got an
Orb album and it sounded like the sort of music I made, and I thought it was
amazing (Adventures beyond the Ultraworld). So then I started buying other
stuff that sounded similiar, and before long I had a substantial record
collection and was DJing at Megatripolis!
Even now I listen to P-funk, hip-hop and free jazz (and stuff like the
Stone Roses and Charlatans) as well as idm. I copied a Nine Inch Nails tape
and a Nitzer Ebb tape off of someone once but I really didn`t like it; I
have a slight mistrust of industrial music because of it`s slightly
fascistic undertones (but that`s another story)... That`s why I`m into stuff
that continues the line from jazz through P-funk through techno, and why I`m
more into "emotive" electronic music than anything else...
