I'm not very big on lyrics in dance music, especially in the form of
wailing divas or, um, really cutesy vocals. However, the voice on its own
is quite a rich instrument, and when I can't understand the vocal part on
a really phat interesting piece of dance music I find myself often getting
caught up in the enthusiasm of the music more than I think I would if a
synth part was laid in the same place. Sometimes it scares me a little
because I'd hate to think how vacuous the lyric content probably is :)
I also like vocal samples when used to affect, and not abused. A recent
record I heard (I think it's on Platipus) cuts the Bulgarian's Woman's
Choir over a really active piece of music and it just sounds excellent.
However, last night I walked off a dance floor because a reasonable piece
of music started overlaying this really "girlish" (sorry for the
stereotype) voice thing which just killed the tune for me.
