anyone who gets the chance should check out Dubtribe - they are a collective of musicians who are optimised for live performance. i've seen them at shows where they integrate the DJ into the setup as well. it's really great. they don't really have songs per se, they have elements which they can bring in and out. live percussion, vocals, guitar, whatever, also might feature in any given performance. kevin, the main technology person, has a rack full of gear, with a mixing board. he can bring in any of the elements he wants. they really have invented a new style of jamming, actually. kevin fires up some rhythm. the percussionist adds something. the vocalist kicks in. the DJ matches up a record and mixes that in as well. it's an integrated performance, and when they're on, they really kick hard. amusingly enough (or perhaps i should say ironically), they have a 12" out on Organico called Mother Earth and i think it's not all that hot. i've seen the songs on it done live and they just work better in the live setting, mainly because they can tailor the performance to the audience. on record, it sounds too "canned" and repetitive. now, two years ago, who would have thought that a techno band could be better live than on record... :) it's all a question of what you set out to do, i guess. from what i've read in the british music press, Underworld (hi darren) are basically doing the same thing over in europe. i hope more groups get into the act (pun intentional). /jon

OOps! Just shot a blank! Anyway, you were looking for a term... it just sounds like jamming! Similar to Jazz... just improvise on the music (melodies, drums, etc), and bring in elements whenever (including segues such as drum, guitar, or trumpet/sax solos). So, Dubtribe could be an electronic+acoustic jam-session group. I believe I've heard of Dubtribe before; I shall check them out! -djkc Imagine that...Jazz all over again...music with the groovey human element.

You definitely should. They come up to Seattle often, and play an excellent set every time. However, I haven't seen 'em anywhere else, and from what was posted here I assume there are more members. For these shows it's just Sunshine and Moonbeam and MC whasisname that's on Mother Earth. However, they still put out a great sound, more tribal-housey up here, changing with regards to the crowd... and they're the kindest folks on earth, too! :) Matt

US3 was able to use whatever that want from the Blue Note Record archives and then they rap and play improv on top of these Blue Note grooves. I think this can be done on house-derived grooves too. For instance, I love playing my trumpet on top of "Atom Bomb" by DJ Pierre. Actually, Atom Bomb is really a neat foundation groove for all sorts of mixing. Re: more about the future
We did this when we played at a couple of raves...it sort of worked, but we only had 2 weeks to prepare, so it was a bit rushed. We had lots of "songs" on a seqeuncer. These songs consisted of lots of little loops of various bits and styles that could be punched in and out of the mix as we played. on top of this we had several synths we could dub over the top, a few drum loops on machines, with some old hardware sequencers sync'ed up. The DJ would mix records in every now and then (did a terrific job too - nice one wiz!), he then play a couple of tracks. When we were setup for the next set of "loops" he mixed us back in. It's hard work, and you really have to practice to make it worthwhile. Be prepared to make some new loops on the spot! Cheers t' everyone, Mark
