I really think it all boils down to a matter of taste, what *you* prefer to listen too. Richard James and Richard Hawtin are to me, without question, the two guys responsible for the most innovative sounds around and I am suckin up records by these guys faster than anything else. It is no coincidence that these guys are also great friends and the possibility of a project between +8 and Rephlex has already been mentioned. It all comes down to your ideals and preferences in the end...talkin to people from RJ's crew on sunday, we were all ravin' over PlastikMan and how great we all thought it was. In a different sphere, im sure many would disagree, but its not really how prolific an artist is, more the spheres that surround them.

i've listened to FUSE and lots of Namlook stuff (couple of FAX compilations) but i just can't see the value in either of them. are people equating proliferance with talent? i've noticed that bands that only put out one brilliant single and then vanish (ultraviolet catastrophe anyone :) ) don't get a lot of mention. maybe that's just cos people forget if there isn't a constant stream of product to remind them. i dunno. this makes a good topic for a new thread though: what are your favorite "one hit wonders"? Leo Anibaldi. I haven't really heard much from him, so I can't comment really. About Namlook (and his output volume): yes, I think a lot of the things he does is crap, but some of his collaborations with other guys (Ramin, Dj Chris, Jenssen) are well worth investigating. I have been a bit wary of the man from the beginning, because of his "The day we have to compromise, will quite" reclamation and his 3 tracks per week output. But he does push boundaries and experiment in the ambient world. At least that's what I would like to think. I feel the same way about Richie Hawtin (genius!), and I'm fairly enthusiastic about the Aphex Twin (with some reservations). I think Alan is probably right when he says it's a matter of taste. For example, quite a bit of Richie Hawtin's stuff (on Dimension Intrusion, for example) has a fairly simple structure. But I tend to enjoy the kind of elegant simplicity which I associate with much of +8's work. So I can certainly understand that someone who prefers something a bit more "robust" wouldn't like a lot of Richie Hawtin's stuff. No big deal, just a matter of different tastes... As another example of different tastes in action, take Pete Ashdown's reviews. I generally like what he has to say, and I find his reviews really useful. But there's one area which I've found I've consistently disagreed, and that's when it comes to harder techno. For example, he disliked OverDrive's Inner Works Vol. 1 and 2, while this is one of my favourite compilations of hard stuff (except for a few truly terrible tracks, one of which involves a power saw). On the other hand, he liked Wakin' Up a Dead Planet, whereas I found it much too noisy and lacked a lot of "space" that I prefer hard techno to have. Perhaps it's the same difference of taste at work -- simple elegance vs. robust development? (Not that these two are necessarily incompatible, but maybe it's a starting point for discussion) Rob
