Mike and Tyler from Exist Dance stayed at Casa del UVC this weekend...
They played me some new stuff:
- two remixes of "cantamilla"... UNBELIEVABLE... slow grinding hip hop
beats and lots of real bass & guitar...
- a remix of "mya yadana"... see above! this one is particularly
amazing with a sampled jazz scat vocal transmogrified into the
weirdest bassline i've ever heard...
- a high lonesome sound system remix of a tylervision track featuring
samples: "the farmer said to the boll weevil... and the boll weevil
said to the farmer... but a boll weevil is an insect..." (very
negativland-esque). also breaks into a KISS sample "you like my seven
inch leather heels!!!" gut-bustingly hilarious. i'm harping on them
to get the Tylervision double-length "concept album" finished ASAP.
and some old stuff... when they were in art school, mike & tom used to
do performance/installations at CalArts. stuff like twenty record
players all playing records "collaged" together from bits of other
records. mike had two performances, "the high lonesome sound" and
"dreams are real good" archived on a 4-tape set with some very nifty
artwork and packaging. he's thinking about maybe doing a very limited
edition set. the music was quite incredible - like brian eno's
ambient stuff only with lots of weird noises (mainly from the needles
on the record players jumping around) and bursts of recognizable
fragments of music.
that's it on the music front. most of the rest of the weekend was
spent getting high and watching tapes of The Simpsons.
