Information about Al Gore's email address might be of interest to some on this list too. That doesn't make it appropriate to post. I really enjoy the idm list precisely because the s/n ratio is so low - I get information and discussion about (the addmittedly vaguely defined term) intelligent dance music, and very little else.

This is true, but it doesn't change the fact that there are places like rec.audio and the bpm list which are designed for subjects like preffered cartridges. If there were no other options for this discussion on the Internet, I would have no objection to it being on idm. But there are. I don't think it was discourteous of me to ask that they be used.

Whoever posted the question about cartridges could have asked, "Can anyone recommend a good cartridge for this kind of music in private mail? If there's interest, I'll post a summary." I don't think anyone would object to that.

There are probably a lot of computer programmers here too. That doesn't mean I'll post asking how to do something in C. Again, there are places where that question would be suitable.

I don't think there are any hard-and-fast outlined rules as to what's appropriate on this list in particular. I don't subscribe to the rec.audio groups or to bpm precisely because discussion of cartridges bores me. This is the reason there are seperate newsgroups and mailing lists for seperate subjects. Not everyone is interested in the same things. I think most of the people on this list subscribed because they want to read and write about this wonderful music. Beyond that, I don't think it's fair to assume anything. C. -- (chris.hilker) cspot@cats.ucsc.edu We're all in this together.

I'm suprised that someone sat on the cartridge question so quickly. How narrow is the focus of this group? In a list that deals with music that is played mostly on vinyl format using 1200 turntables I didn't think that the topic of cartridges was that far off-center. I had actually hoped that a discussion of preferred cartridges for types of sound might spark from this; it should make a difference in the quality of sound (ie better bass response, etc), which might be of interest to some in the list. Beside the question of how to ask advice of like-minded people. My 2 cents. Phil

Well ambient music with its lush synth textures really hurts if played on bad equipment. Pops & hisses kinda detract from it. The play method makes a difference. What good is all this cool music if it sounds like garbage on your setup? The standard question of "how do I get this thing to track correctly" is a valid one.

BPM is a better list for discussing these matters, and you'll get people who care. When you send it to a list where 10% of the subscribers are actual DJs, then you run the risk of boring a lot of people. I can hit the "D" key just as easy as anyone else, but I have to wade through a *ton* of mail every day. Other people may not be as forgiving. Rule of thumb: If it doesn't apply to the mailing list, don't send it.
