(Here you go folks, just pumped this one out. A little late, i know...) -------------------------------------------- Autechre - "5th Album" - Nothing/Warp - 1998 http://www.warp-net.com -------------------------------------------- Sean Booth and Rob Brown are the sound designers who call themselves Autechre. A digital symphony of controlled electronic sounds that is just as much IDM as it is classical music for the next millennium. Had Sean and Rob never met in 1987, the likes of Squarepusher and Plaid wouldn't exist today. Autechre extract sounds from the extreme depth's of their machine's, getting inside the digitally manipulated noise that makes the listener shiver with vivid imagery. As Sean put's it, "Crawl right into the machine and fuck about with it from the inside." Imagine a symphonic collage of twists and loops rolling around in several directions, imagine seeing shapes floating in your mind as they rhythmically transform piece by piece. Their untitled 5th album released on Nothing/Warp is nothing short of perfection coming from two guys who have pioneered the evolution of electronic music for the 90's. The first track, "Acroyear2" is a technically amusing collage of wonderful loops with synthetic bleeps splashing around in the background. For those of you tuned into the fluid yet angular approach of Autechre's music, "Vose In" will be the experimental sounds you've been accustomed to. "Corc" is by far one of the most eclectic forms of digital manipulation that places the audience in a trance. With its empowering percussion I begin to see how sounds transform and disassemble themselves forming a melodic style: The signature of Autechre's fascination with noise. "Arch Carrier" takes the listener to another dimension, with its unfocused yet direct rhythm sections, the statically energetic loops bend and twist peacefully and quietly. "Drane2", the last track, is the conclusion of a fully assembled album setting your mind at ease with textured ambience and distant melodies. Classical electronic experimentation at its finest... Shapes are what make Autechre the sound engineer's of the future. Are you ready to physically absorb this sound? Pietro, Contributing Editor. The Circular Cosmic Spot http://www.sdriver.com/spot
