aw man, so it wasn't some hot new AFX shit? as far as i'm concerned his last album was 'drukqs'. only thing since then has been the analord stuff, a cute 12" series side project thing - SOME of which was then collected on a CD. when is RDJ going to drop some new, serious, death-defying, genre-refining shit? ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- From: "Brandon Tallent" <btallent@gmail.com> Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2008 09:37:32 -0700

Naah, this is strictly drum'n'bass he's playing in that Youtube video. The harder kind though. That first tune is called The Drained by Vertigo, released on Dropping Science, which is the shizzle when it comes to dnb labels btw. That last one in the vid is some of that typical "darkstep" hardcore beat banging style Evol Intent are so well known for. Maybe it's time to check out some of those DJ's playing on that radio station I have in my footer, if you dig that kind of material. :) -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.net http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station

I am halfway, and the first half was a combination of mediocre instrumental hip hop and flatlining tech-house that was poorly dj'ed. Not really sure what this has to do with Aphex Twin and if it's some nasty little richard james joke. On Sun, May 4, 2008 at 12:28 AM, dr. butcher m.d. <drbmd@badtaste4life.com> wrote:

IDM-Lister listened to a DJ-set by AFX and was shocked to find hiphop and tech-house do not sound amazing, not even when spun by Richard D. James. petitions are being filled, cds and vinyls burnt, never will the AFX logo be worn by a single IDM-List-member. wheres the queue for burning afx on a stake? do we get our free bucket of napalm too? Did he actually play any of his own music though? We all know he has a hard-drive of unreleased material, plus a fair amount of material he has released.. I haven't listened to the recording yet, but I am hoping for something more than just hip-hop. Of course he's allowed to play whatever he wants to play. But he's also trying to please the baying fans... William 2008/5/4 Esa Ruoho <esaruoho@gmail.com>:

That's usually the case with DJ sets. People spin some records, not necessarily their own. In most DJ cultures this is common. In fact, when it comes to drum'n'bass for instance the ones that do play only their own music are sometimes regarded as lame. Dillinja is probably the only one who does this. Paradox has a tendency to do this as well, but he tends to do very a-typical DJ sets anyway, since he's not really a DJ in the first place. I see that in breakcore circles artists are more into playing their own stuff, but in this case it's more of a performance than a DJ set. Which is also what AFX is I guess. I doubt his best skill is DJing, hence he isn't good at it. It's typical for electronic music though that good producers are called in to play DJ sets because their name brings in a lot of folks, but sometimes you're better off checking out a tru DJ, who can really create a vibe on the floor and play a good set, instead of just a bunch of records. -- "progress doesn't come from early risers progress is made by lazy men looking for easier ways to do things" http://n3wjack.net http://www.jungletrain.net - 24/7 dnb radio station

Hmm, over here it brings out all sort of weirdos really. Including guys with big woolly beards wearing red lumberjack shirts nodding their head while drinking their beer. Breakcore parties are teh fun.

Noisia? The dutch drum'n'bass lad? Not really breakcore innit. :) The rest rocks yeah, and 2 Venetian Snares albums? You are so breakcore! ;) I hope it's "Winnipeg is a fucking shithole" and "Rossz Csillag Allat Született", or "Cavalcade Of Glee And Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms" or "Find Candace" (for the pedo art) VS pwnz, but he also plays DJ sets btw, to get right back on topic. it's a little known fact that those 'nerd pits' are actually 'secret sausage parties' and enjoying them could eliminate entirely any Real Cred you've gotten from standing around at IDM shows and yelling out the name of unreleased VSTs as they are mixed in with the sound of a frog pooing on a brittle winter leaf underwater. In addition, they lead to dangerous shouting matches about animated cartoons and d20s, much to the delight of the 0-2 ladies who were forced to attend. take heed young buck -- listen to something cool that has a fashion prerogative not derived entirely from ironic zubaz wear. -meatsock On Mon, May 5, 2008 at 9:28 AM, chthonic streams <chthonic@chthonicstreams.com> wrote:

yes, i know what a DJ set is. this is part of my point though, was it billed as a DJ set? if i went to an AFX show i'd expect it to be a "show" not a DJ set. as you say, he is not a DJ in the first place. this was my issue with seeing ellen allien play with t. raumschmiere and apparat a few years ago. they played sets off their laptops and keyboards, she crouched down and spun records. mind you, the set was excellent as allien is a great techno DJ, but i went expecting to have her playing and singing. same with mira calix. i don't really get DJ sets booked into performance venues. they are 2 different things. having the DJ up on a stage - there's no point really. nothing to look at (well except ellen allien, she is just cute and charming to watch). unless you have some master turntablist and you hang a camera over the decks and project that on a screen to watch his hands as he moves the records and mixer or something. I will say there were at least a few songs that had that RDJ signature sound. Definitely some melodic bits were so RDJ it couldn't have been someone else (unless it was the Tuss hehe), but there were at least as many if not more songs that sounded sampled or DJ'd for sure. I think there are about 3 songs that stick out in my head as totally RDJ tunes and they were simply brilliant. If they weren't AFX, then he found some good imitators and mixed them in his DJ set. Still would like to figure out who they were if it isn't AFX. chthonic wrote:

Seriously, I thought IDM was motivated by a spirit of open mindedness and eclecticism and a distaste for 'genre boundaries' and limitations. But when someone who gets a lot of respect from the IDM community as a pioneer with little respect for genre or convention plays a set incorporating techno and (gasp!) hip hop tunes that he likes (and lets ignore for the moment how much IDM there'd even be if it hadn't had hip hop and techno to nick ideas and techniques from) people are up in arms that he's not conforming to their conservative expectations of what an 'IDM artist' should be playing. ffs, you'd think people would show him the respect of trying to see what he's doing with it and why he's into it, rather than writing it off as 'oh he's playing hip hop, how awfully boring.' not everyone knows all about music before going to a show. most of the world doesn't spend tons of time on lists or boards about music. mike p. probably had a bigger draw because his music probably has much wider acceptance, it's not as harsh as hellfish's. i bet the people going nuts to hellfish tracks had just never heard of him, which is why they weren't at the show earlier. if hellfish had played the following week that might have been a different story. i actually forgot hellfish's name for awhile even though i have a deathchant CD of him and DJ producer. it's "no mistakes allowed". i always thought of it as "the deathchant CD", since it's just a black cover and CD with their logo on it. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

So when did people stop going to shows out of curiosity and through their own volition, instead of having to be 'sold' it. Maybe no one went to hellfish, but jumped to michael p, because they are fickle? The fudge has a much richer flavour.
