here's a review of a record i recieved recently. i translated it from swedish rather quickly, so excuse me if the english sounds odd at places. Thread: "The Need for a Sky" (Sensory Expansion) I immidiately get suspicious when I recieve records that the artist released by himself - one might think that the music isn't good enough for a record company to release it. James Izzo releses his own music under the name Thread, and when I get to hear the first tracks I fear my preconceptions are true. A straight techno-bassline plus a few clumsy synthsweeps - it has that amateurish "cheap home studio"-sound. But further on the record improves when Izzo lays down some dark ambient tracks. If you skip the first tunes this turns into a rather nice record, which fits in nicely among other wierd ambient techno records from companies like Fax or Psy-Harmonics. It does sound a bit 1995, but with enough personality to make it innovative. And if Izzo intends to continue designing his own covers, I suggest he takes some lessons first.
