Ile Aux Gales 2. Manistee North Pierhead 3. Seul Choix Point 4. North Manitou Island Shoal The works are inspired by sailor’s tales of being adrift on The Great Lakes during storms, and catastrophic weather. Sailors, looking out on the horizon for a sign of life, a light of hope, aimed their ships towards the safety of these phantom lighthouses hoping to get to a safe harbor. Often times these phantom lighthouses just lead to a rocky shoal and a watery death. These “phantom” lights have been a thing of myth for as long as The Great Lakes freshwater seas have been sailed. In many ways, The Phantom Light is a sequel to Huronic Minor, as Great Lakes lore, and Matt Borghi’s own experiences on The Great Lakes were the creative impetus for this work. The Phantom Light is initially being sold in a limited edition of 30, hand-packaged, hand-numbered CDs. For this release we’ve incorporated a single-sheet monoprint tucked inside a poly slip sleeve, then encased in another sleeve that’s been hand-printed with a photo-transfer linocut block of the Ludington light cover image in a gray PMS 442 monotone. The work that’s gone into this package is indicative of SLO BOR Media works to come. After the 30 CD run is over, the music will only be available through our digital distributors, including iTunes, MSN, Real Rhapsody, Emusic, and other purveyors of digitally downloadable music.
