http://www.justintonation.net/ if you've ever wondered what the 'proper' fifth sounds like, here's an mp3 file example.. if you're wonering what just intonation is, it is the return to what was the original, more precise measuring of our twelve tone scale through which an instrument could only be tuned to one key at a time... this was a pain in the ass, so they approximated the scale into what we now use, having lost the original, more natural harmonies to convenience..apparently we're all brainwashed... i'm trying to do a track now using this just intonation... i'm not really hearing it yet... anyone have success with this? i think my problem is that i'm waiting for something really fucked up to happen, like my reality caving in and eye sight going..... nat http://www.littlefurythings.net _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement? I haven't worked with just intonation, but I use a lot of non-12-tone equal temperaments. (here comes the plug) .. an early 19 tone-ET peice. http://fluoroscopickid.com/mp3/token-row.mp3 Using any tuning you can eventually brain wash yourself so that it sounds quite comfortable. Definitely keep at the just intoned work, but afterwards keep exploring. Oh, and to balance out the plug, here is a lot more microtonal listening of all kinds (some good, some bad). http://infohost.nmt.edu/~jstarret/listenmp3.html - j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The only artist I know that has worked regularly with JI is Robert Rich, likely dismissed by many 'here' (I see this is posted to idm-list as well as amb) as New Age fluff or Music to Sleepwalk To. I've always found listening to albums on which JI is used like an experience with 'exotica' (and now I look at e.g. <http://www.justintonation.net/jistore.html> I can see why - Harry Partch and Lou Harrison, for example, were practitioners). Also if you've heard gamelan, it feels sort of similar. Reality does not cave in, nothing fucked up happens, but I know some do find it a bit queasy. alan (P.S. RR works in Just Intonation: Geometry, Propagation, Yearning, Numena, Rainforest, Gaudí) --On 13 February 2006 19:53 -0500 nat hawks <natbot@hotmail.com> wrote:

on that note(sorry unintentional for pun), check out the book: Temperament by Stuart Issacoff. it it discusses applications and development of many tuning systems, microtunings, design vs. tuning(harpsichords to pianos to keys) and email me if about my alternate tunings with irrational numbers and mathematical constants, causes harmonic/inharmonic steps to drift for infinity in some cases. later, nth.
