Good point, Thorsten Sideboard, Mr. Highpoint Lowlife! BTW, have enjjoyed the Village Orchestra record much lately. The kids like it too (a tough audience)! I've noticed that too. But I appreciate the posts about shows and records I may not hear about any other way. Lately I've been listening to a lot of music at work. I sit at a PC all day creating and troubleshooting motion graphics for a game company. I can get in at least 6 hours of serious listening a day. What works best for me doing this stuff are long complicated, evolving, slow, instrumental pieces. Lots of 'ambient', but some of what you might call 'idm', and 'folktronica'. I try to tweak my music to resonate with doses of caffeine or green tea or mata and of course, the necessary pace of the work (breakneck deadlines or steady but relaxed). Some of what: Biosphere (the whole catalog) - among my all time favorites, someone relatively new to me who I first caught at Decibel Fest last year in Seattle, I think it was - Loscil (from Vancouver, Canada) - recommended! Greg Davis and Sebastian Roux have put out a very interesting record; "Paquet Surprise". Hard to categorize really, but indeed surprising, and a rich experience. I listen to Monolake at least once a day - although I find it hard to sit still when I have it on, particularly "Polygon Cities" and "Cinemascope" two of my all time faves, Alva Noto's - "Insen", "Vrioon" are frequent - along with Oval, Biosphere and Loscil my most productive listens - somehow these four artists set me up just right and keep me where I need to be. Their musics are deep and nonfigurative and nuanced enough that they often reveal more to me than I expect and change with my mood, etc. Good qualities, I think. Murcof's "Remembranza" which I have combined with old interviews of artists like Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and others - I think it works - go to Ubu.com, download some and try it out. Harold Budd's "The White Arcades" and "The Pearl" (w/Eno) also stays on quite a bit, Pan Sonic's "Aaltopiiri" and "Kesto". Some new records I've been rotating in are Twine's newest, Kiln's "Thermals", Koda's "Movements", Secede's "Tryshasla", the Village Orchestra's "Et In Arcadia Ego", Climax Golden Twins "Session 9", Caribou's "Milk of Human Kindness", Mum's "Yesterday...". Minotaur Shock's "Maritime" Fennesz' "Venice" (new to me) Eluvium's "Talk Among the Trees", as well as miscellaneous records by The Books, The Boats, Piana, Tujiko Noriko, Dntel, Architecture In Helsinki, Animal Collective, old ones by Cluster, Nick Drake, Neu!, Arovane's "Tides" and of course always returning to the Autechre catalog for pepper and gravity. My connection is going to fail here when the power goes out- already a flicker off and then on again - lot of trees around here and when its windy, like now, its just a matter of time... Some of what I like and a little bit of why. I could go on of course, but who would read it? I'd like to read more about what others on the list are listening to and the wheres and whys of it.
