I'm listening to this track Thought vs Action, by The Field, I think on Kompakt, where the last 5 minutes of the track contains a glitched up loop of some piece of instrumental pop music from the late 70's or early 80's, that is instantly recognisable, but which I simply cannot put my finger on who it is... Anybody got a clue ? Would be a true head scratcher at a pub quiz. There's audio samples of it up at the Kompakt records and mp3 websites (apologies for the absence of a link ; have no web access here)

Whoa. Well spotted, there, Jeff. Some of the Four Tops stuff in that period was pretty atmospheric, not to mention angst-ridden, e.g. 'Bernadette, and esp. '7 Rooms of Gloom'. A Kompakt-ed version of one of those would be a gas (provided Superpitcher didn't decide to spray his insipid vocalisings over it). alan --On 25 November 2005 10:28 -0500 theREALmxyzptlk <theREALmxyzptlk@comcast.net> wrote:

Nice one Jeff. It's been bugging me ever since I first heard it. Was but a wee whippersnapper back in the late 70's/early 80's ; I wouldn't be surprised if 60's vintage soul/r'nb tunes were still getting heavy rotation on Irish radio back then ; or indeed, that they were even still in the Irish charts... I seem to remember Paddy Reilly or Brendan Shine (like Robbie Williams, only he came with with a piano accordian and Farah slacks) being number one with "The Fields of Athenry" for almost my entire post-First Holy Communion primary school education ! You see the Ireland of my youth was poor, debt riddled and depressed ; nobody had any money for new records... nowadays, we're joint fifth heaviest cocaine users in Europe, ahead of both the French and the Germans even. And yet everybody STILL has no money for records ! It's all a little bit Irish ye could say. theREALmxyzptlk <theREALmxyzptlk@c To: Brian.Power@cso.ie omcast.net> cc: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] spot the sample... 25/11/05 15:28 Please respond to theREALmxyzptlk First off, you're too late in your historical framework. In the states, we have stations that only play oldies; in other words, they're still in rotation. I like a lot of that stuff (being on the cusp of 50 years myself), but, well, not all of the time. Clear Channel/Viacom/Murdoch and things equally ugly rule the airwaves here these days, unless you're listening to public or college radio. The Motown stuff is mostly incredible - dunno if that's an objective thing in the music or just my constructed ears, but one can say that the instrumentation in those tracks takes the writing to a new level, which isn't shabby to start with. It still sounds good to me.

Nah - bad financial decisions exacerbated by pharmacology are the domain of no one region. I can make bad financial decsions without drugs.
