Why bother with an iPod? I guess they have that gee-whiz wheel thingee
interface, but that's about it. The iRiver H140, although discontinued,
allows for uncompressed .wav recording. The iRiver H340 (also discontinued,
but easily available on eBay, etc.) adds a color screen but restricts
recording to mp3. Both have FM tuners. The Cowon iAudio X5 adds FLAC playback
support, but handles it's connections (except for headphone jack) through a
dongle device, which may or may not turn you off).
Long story short, there's a lot of options out there besides the iPod. If
recording is what you're really interested in, then check out the M-Audio
MicroTrack 2496.
