Hello everyone. A group of us in Minneapolis are starting a tape swap and most of us are new to this. I know that there are a few of you on the list that have extensive knowledge of this medium and I was wondering if you would be able to help me. I'm wanting to know some basic stuff about what tapes are best, tips and tricks for recording, tape decks, what not to do, etc. If you are willing to share your experience you are more than welcome to email me directly. Thanks and take care ..jonathan.a --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This is 2005. Cassette tapes are basically outmoded, not to say an EXTINCT media format. Is this for real, or are you taking the p!ss? Being a dinosaur myself, I have crates and boxes full of old cassettes and hung on to my car tape deck dearly. However, my new car features a radio / CD / MP3 placer and gone are the tapes (that used to warp and stretch in the sun). Are you really really serious?? If so, get back and I'll share some of my historic knowledge with the young 'uns :-) (There are people on this very list with whom I exchanged tapes around ten years ago! Ha ha. "Home taping is skill in music". Temember the skull and crossbones warnings?) I * On 19 Jun 2005 at 1:39, Jonathan Ackerman wrote:

Well, goodness. That's amazing :-) How retro can you get. So; what do you want to know? Go for the 90 min tapes - the 60's work out more expensive and are too short anyway... you want more than an hour at a time, right? Don't get the 120 min ones, because the physical tape is too thin and thus more likely to get damaged easily.

I used to hook up the tape deck to the PC sound-outs and then arrange a playlist in WinAmp (carefully ensuring approx 46 mins playtime per side). There's a plug-in called Square Soft Advanced Crossfading that does a good job for gap-free replay. THEN, when all is ready to go, press RECORD, but you'll have to sit and monitor the whole thing in real time to adjust levels (unless it's all coming from one source like one CD with the same sound balance in the original). This, folks, is a time consuming labour of love. Personal preference: I don't use Dolby. If you do, then only go for Dolby B, but do a few tests with Dolby in and out, and see which way you prefer the sound. Have fun ...
