I ordered the new Rich Devine CD from sublight ( http://www.sublightrecords.com/), and for some reason they sent me Dan Doormouse's new CD "Major Changes." Living in the Midwest as I do, I've known of Dan for many years as a sort of violent, drunken clown with a penchant for throwing raw meat at his audience. I've heard his stuff and was never really a fan, but something happened when he relocated from Milwaukee to Miami Beach. Starting off with a message from Dan's parents, this new CD foregoes some of the distortion and agression of Midwest Hardcore for a more artful sort of collage work. The touchstone of "Major Changes" is extensive use of vocal samples, both field recordings and apparently archival audio from Dan's childhood. Especially nice is the track "Lulu" which takes a child's singing and screaming to build a surprisingly sweet sort of dancehall riddim. The sonic quality of the production is a surprise too. The live/cutup drumming of Josh Anonymous sounds very live (and cut-up not-live as well) and the vocal samples are minimally (or subtly) processed so that they sound very natural. It's the first record I've heard from the Addict crew that wouldn't annoy my wife, which is saying something.
