[Highpoint Lowlife News / May 2005]
Hey!
I feel bad - i have no new downloads for you this month! Its
all been busy busy between partying/travelling and planning
two upcoming tours - Like A Stuntman in June and Tigrics in
July. (full details of the Tigrics tour in next months
newsletter...)
Highlights this month are the official release of Like A
Stuntman full-length and a rare London show for the Marcia
Blaine School For Girls. Read on for more details..
LIKE A STUNTMAN
This month sees the official release date for Like A
Stuntman's 'Fresh Air Is Not The Worst Thing In Town',
which should be hitting stores worldwide on May 23rd. They
just played a release party in Germany at the weekend which
went exceptionally well, and the reviews are starting to come
in..
"Fresh on the heels of the 7-inch Reduce EP, Like A Stuntman
packs an exhausting amount of musical detail into eleven songs
on its 35-minute, full-length debut Fresh Air Is Not The Worst
Thing In Town. In contrast to Highpoint Lowlife's predominantly
electronic offerings, the Frankfurt quartet's sound is off-kilter,
experimental noise-pop that's equal parts synths, drums, and
guitars. There's a lo-fi, home-made feel to the album (voices
and count-ins are sometimes audible) that complements the band's
occasionally rough instrumental attack and indie-pop sensibility;
vocals, for example, are often loosely, even distractedly
drawled throughout. The material is consistently strong, with
the band demonstrating a gift for punchy arrangements and
infectious melodies;" Full review at

Reviews are still coming for their earlier 7" release:
"*Reduce *(Highpoint Lowlife)
Another 7" treat from one of the UK's best kept secret outlets
for high quality electronics. Like A Stuntman stands proudly as
the label's first full band signing and represents the indie
sound a la Morr Music or Sub Pop. Collectors, this one's for you.

They'll be hitting the UK shores on May 31st to embark on a
full UK tour in support of the album.
Dates so far are looking like:
may 31 the engine rooms, brighton w/ Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
jun 1 tbc
jun 2 tbc, liverpool
jun 3 silver rocket@garage, london
jun 4 tbc
jun 5 bardens boudoir, london w/ Hands On Heads
jun 6 packhorse, leeds
jun 7 tbc
jun 8 unpeeled@windmill, london
jun 9 beavers bar, hinckley w/ Collections Of Colonies Of Bees
jun 10 cafe dwaze zaken, amsterdam
jun 11 wohnzimmer, lühneberg
Still a few gaps to fill in there, so if you can help, please do
get in touch. We'll be putting on the Bardens show ourselves on
June 5th. The line up for that one is going to be most excellent,
with Hands On Heads playing support, who are just a complete genius
act. The people behind the band are all part of the Upset The
Rhythm collective, who are pretty much the best promoters/organizers
in London at the moment for underground interesting sounds. Also
new Highpoint Lowlife signing, The Mandelbrot Set (live guitar/bass
sampling, 3 piece postrock outfit), and The Accountant (Adaadat
records) with DJ support from the most lovely Psapp (we'll get them
out for a live show one of these days, mark our words! heh!)
MARCIA BLAINE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
The girls just keep on going! A very nice new review in US magazine
Stylus:
"I think emotions are the key here. Good artists can take the most
banal material and turn it into something not only memorable but
also essential. Most of the tracks here use the basic elements of
hip-hop and electronic music, and it would be incredibly easy for
these artists to create something predictable and stale. But that's
not what I hear. I hear music that is interesting yet fun,
experimental yet quiet, melodious yet unconventional. There's
something truly frightening about the thirteen-minute "Routed to
the Spot" (by Marcia Blaine), a spiraling, elliptical ambient
work that weaves a variety of synthesizer lines into an intricate
(but delicate) pattern that seems neither capable of ending or
beginning - just existing"

They've had not one but two new releases out since the release of
the 'Some Paths Lead Back Again' compilation - a most excellent
release for Dalriada and now another belter out on Stuff Records,
a split between a Marcia Blaine presents side, and a DJ Shabu Shabu
side.
Catch them down in London on the 14th of this month at Furthur

Both albums now off to be mastered by our audio ninja, Twerk
(audibleoddities.com). Hopefully have the Bovaflux album 'Where
There Was Nothing' pressed up in time for Sonar next month, with
the Village Orchestra album 'Et In Arcadia Ego' roughtly about a
month afterwards. Check back for more details of our Barcelona
gig next month, where we should hopefully have Fisk Industries and
Bovaflux representing!
As always, I'm sure i'm forgetting something, so check back to
the site for updates..
take care!
