There's an interesting bit in David Byrne's book "How Music Works" about how music is shaped by the context in which it's listened to. Like once western classical music moved out of the chamber / Baroque period and into larger concert halls, ornate trills and decoration gave way to more bombastic thundering pieces like Wagner. (And then reached their ultimate extension in the arena rock era) - And now the ubiquity of ppl listening through piece of shit earbuds in public places has led mastering/EQ and pop production techniques to adapt to that sonic environment.
