I work on a linux machine all the live long day (running Red Hat
Enterprise Workstation), and audio and video have always been
problematic. If you use linux for web browsing, I'm sure you know what
I mean.
But the latest release of MPlayer, and the MPlayer browser plugin are
finally seeming to be stable, functional and trouble free, once you
get them installed.
Mplayer is at
http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ -- note that while it says
"Closed For Patent Infringement" you can click through to the website.
I've not tried installing from precompiled binaries, primarily because
I don't have root on my work machine, but first choice on
Redhat/Fedora machines would be the RPMs. Installing from source
isn't that hard if you read the instructions carefully.
The second part of this is the MPlayer plugin:
http://mplayerplug-in.sourceforge.net/
This now seems to be fully stable, and you can hear audio in Quicktime
movies finally.
If you try and install this stuff and have problems, e-mail me off
list. Like most things linux, you don't double click an installer and
automagically get everything in its right place. But hey, if you're
using Linux, you don't expect that do you?
