i love "strangely isolated place", it's truly a beautiful thing, great "electronic shoegazer"music (even moreso than last year's pluramon album with julee cruise). i was going to see him last year when he cancelled. has anyone seen him live? what does he do? d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I saw him play upstairs at The Garage in London last year, and was actually quite disappointed - he had his laptop and a synth, so most of the backing was pre-prograamed and he would play live melody over the top. The thing is, live, the beats sounded weak and feeble, and the synth melodies went a little too Jean-Michel Jarre which once i had that thought in my head, was sort of hard to overlook. i wouldnt make much of an effort to go see him again, which i feel bad about saying as i really like his albums, and also know how hard it can be to transform an electronic composition into an interesting/entertaining live show. my 2 pence thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

M83 w/Ulrich Schnauss dates: 4.13.05 @ Bowery Ballroom in NYC 4.14.05 @ Bowery Ballroom in NYC 4.16.05 @ Trocadero / Balcony Bar in Philadephia 4.20.05 @ Wexner Center in Columbus 4.21.05 @ Empty Bottle in Chicago 4.22.05 @ Empty Bottle in Chicago 4.26.05 @ Chop Suey in Seattle 4.28.05 @ Bimbo's in SF Here's the thing: I've heard that the Schnauss live PAs are kind of ho-hum and I absolutely DETEST M83. Anyone wanna convince me it's worth the 90 minute drive to Chicago? Thanks in advance. Uh, is he gonna hang out in the US for a month or come back? PLEASE OH PLEASE LET SXSW GET M83. Attention SXSW people, none of whom read this list: DO IT. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm driving 90 minutes to San Francisco to see Ulrich and M83(actually they played in 04, but Ulrich had a hurt had so he didn't make it)...why do you "DETEST" M83? there stuff is really cinematic and emotionally good..similar to Ulrich(but not as good). I didn't like there ALL use of guitars at the show in SF last year though. I guess they thought people wouldn't think they were 'real' musician's if they only used synths(like almost all there recorded stuff is). ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Goelzer" <johng@engberganderson.com> To: <hime@charter.net>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 7:48 AM Subject: RE: [idm] good news for Schnauss fans

For me, it has nothing to do with all-guitars or no-guitars, because I'll be the first to admit that they've got some clever moments on the production side of things. For me, it all comes down to the overwrought songwriting and its gratuitous use of bog-standard weepy minor chord progressions. It's like shoegaze-by-numbers. Unlike most other acts I don't care about or don't like, their music actually makes me angry when I listen to it for any extended period. It's like listening to someone whine for an hour (and that comment has nothing to do with the timbre of the vocals). And yes, I've heard the new record. I wouldn't have thought it possible, but it's even worse than the last one. One man's opinion. Your mileage, as they say, may vary, but I'll be looking for opportunities to see Schnauss on an M83-less bill, like the all-ages show at Open End Gallery in Chicago on 3/18.
