Heh! :-) I'm quite possibly going to be controversial, now, by suggesting that both Alec Empire and Johnny Violent were making proto-Drill'n'Bass back in '93 and maybe even earlier. I know that ATR's "Cyberpunks Are Dead" was '93 and I'm sure Ultraviolence's "I, Destructor" came out that year, too. (I'm still at work at the moment, so I have no access to my record collection - sorry!) I can't remember when Larceny were releasing, but I feel sure it was around that time, too. Whatever - it's not really that important. I'm more interested in what peoples' opinions are towards these bands. Alec Empire, in particular, seems to get little mention in these parts, despite being quite influential, I feel. Perhaps his overt politicisation of his music (rather than a GYBE/ASMZ-like approach) unsettles IDM folk? Anyway, related to this, I have a question: What was the name of the early-90's London Hardcore club night (possibly held at the Electrowerkz) where the door policy was that you could enter up til 11pm, then the doors were locked and no-one could leave until about 3am?!? (I understand that the only light on the dancefloor was a single strobe, too!) I never attended this club, being too softcore, but the concept always amused me! :-) Cheers, Clive ============================================================ From: "qwerty" <miro.merlak@vip.hr> Date: 2005/01/07 Fri PM 04:58:32 GMT To: "IDM" <idm@hyperreal.org> Subject: Re: [idm] So im totally in love with Hangable Auto Bulb 1

maybe... Alroy Road Trax and Conumber both came out in '95 as the HABs did... there's also Plug 123 eps. but i always thought that plug and those spymania-pusher eps are a lot alike the early 93-94 jungle records such as remarc, marvellous cain... more drum'n'bassy. ...and HABs take this to another level... it's more like IDM/braindance/whatever related. but that's my opinion. and i find all those releases i mentioned here in my top 10 favorite records of all time. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- QWERTY RELEASES OUT NOW! : 'The Sorrows Of Young Qwerther' on Piehead (pie035). Definitely, he did tracks on the Rauschen comps back then that was even pre-Gabber....... Unfortunately, a lot of that stuff seems lumped in there, don't care for much of the so-called "Gabber" stuff much myself, but there were a lot of great speed-jungle type tunes out there by the likes of Empire, also by Marc Acardipane as well.... check out early PCP stuff, also WHITE BREAKS stuff and stuff by E-De Cologne! While this stuff sounds somewhat different from the Squarepusher & AFX stuff, i'm sure in some way it had to inspire those guys somewhat........ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

well... there's certainly connections. Aphex Twin remixed Acardipane's We Have Arrived. Two mixes actually made it onto the Classics collection that came out on R&S.... I mean... everybody influenced everybody else. It was a very small scene back then. Hell... if you read liner notes you'll notice that Lenny Dee helped on What Time Is Love by The KLF. At any rate - the whole DJungle Fever label - and the related artists are well worth checking out. Those guys used a shit load of pseudonyms, and the sheer variety in their work is often shocking. Biochip C did some incredible work (and did a lot to help out Catani [Eradicator, Ec8or, E-de-Cologne] in the early days)... Of course - on a strictly drill'n'bass tip... Christoph de Babalon deserves a shit load of credit, the Destroy Berlin! ep on DHR is about as drill as it gets... and that, itself, gives a nod to the No Face record on Praxis... who had ties to the whole free party scene... and the Spiral Tribe crew. Maybe it all started DoEt from the Breach The Peace ep? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

strange... Fringeli released tracks on the Stormcore and RadioBomb labels, which (I'm told) are both offshoots of the old Network23 label that Rzac23 and the whole posse were involved with. At any rate - those a few years after the period in question. of course if we keep stepping back into the past we're gonna start extolling the virtues of early Portion Control and citing things like Negativland's Car Bomb and Yellow Black Rectangular as proto gabber and drill'n'bass (respectively)...

nice... even got Curtis Chip there representing for Zod... I miss Milwaukee. btw - is Pure getting back into more beat intensive stuff? His record on Praxis is incredible (King Kong/Katharsis)... and I think his Drop Bass release might be my favourite thing on the entire label... I'm still pissed that I missed his performance at Mutek... but that Reqoil dvd is pretty intense. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Firstly, wondering if anyone has any 5.1 music suggestions... i recently set up a ghetto $125 Coby system in my apartment and it actually sounds pretty great... i've got Flaming Lips last album remastered to 5.1 and it's fcking unbelievably amazing and probably one of the most drool-on-your-frigging-undies inducing amazingness things i've ever heard. really cool package with tripped out visuals to accompany the album, and videos, and b-sides... so futuristic it's unbelievable my friend has Cornelius-point in 5.1 and it too, is quite nice. there's a video for every song and many are pretty awesome. the mixing is incredible. lastly, i once got to sit through (all stoned on a crappy rug) the Vespertine 5.1 (no visuals) and was pretty, well, floored. any other suggestions? this is new territory for me and am unsure who has mixed to 5.1 and where to look for a list and stuff. anyhelp would be great. SECONDLy, is there such a thing as inexpensive 5.1 mixing software? that would be fun. _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Get Tipper's album "Surrounded". It is an astonishingly beautiful IDM/Downtempo album mixed in 5.1. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! As for mixing in 5.1 I use Digital Performer and the Motu 2408 sound card with multiple speakers. It's quite simple to mix in 5.1 (Protools, Logic and DP are probably the most used software apps for this). The hard part is actually getting it converted and onto a usable format (DVD Audio).
