2004 The Year in Review: Most of what I listen to is at least 20 years old but here's a list of a few songs from recent releases that caught my ear... in playlist order: Song | Artist | Album 01 Phone Call | Jon Brion | Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind OST Nice Intro for this mix, great film 02 Shadows | Wagon Christ | Sorry I Make You Lush Awesome use of a vocal sample from 70s prog-rock band Renaissance - mixes so nicely with the John Barry-esque chord progression. Good 'ole Luke 03 Never Going Back To School |Stella |Better Days Sounds Great The wildcard of my mix, I like the sentiment of this, and I had to represent the very cool German label: ladomat 2000 04 Claati Bros | Infinite Livez | Bush Meat Silliness! When was the last time you heard a rap song about the art gallery scene, with an Opera inspired chorus!!?? 05 Perfect Bird |Hexstatic | Masterview Nice song, cool vocals by Miki Tanabe 06 Terminal red |o9 | Church of the Getto P.C Ah, remember when IDM made your head spin, your minds eye producing fractals while your booty shakes, well, this song does it, too. What I hoped Autechre would have sounded after ep7 07 Marguerite (Hot Edit) |Margueritas|Unclassics (mixed by Morgan Geist) Another booty shaker - lost disco classic with a south of the border feel. 08 Out Of Step| The Soft Pink Truth | Do You Want New Wave or Do You Want the Soft Pink Truth Minor Threat cover: clever, subversive fun. and I like the odd rhythm - the influence of 2step/grime? 09 If Trees Could Speak |The Flashbulb | Red Extensions of Me Some of the flashbulbs tracks bring to mind classic squarepusher, others Classic LTJ Bukem. This one's got it's own little thing going on, with fingerpicked guitar and environmental conscious lyrics? 10 Les 9 portas |Toog | Lou Etendue You know that time that CD started skipping and it still sounded good - this song attempts to replicate it. 11 A Forest | Nouvelle Vague | Nouvelle Vague Nice cover of an Old favorite by the Cure 12 Uniform (Citation) | Jimmy Edgar | Bounce, Make, Model EP Jimmy finally lives up to the hype with his latest ep. A solid electro cut that is not retro, but looks toward the future of the genre. 13 Scarlet | Ilkae | Bring Extra Dragons EP I like Ilkae, he always tries to keep things interesting. but how do I pronounce his name? Rhymes with ill guy? 14 Takin' It Back | Kool Keith | Diesel Truckers One of my favorite MCs matched with a nice track by DJ Premier influenced producer, Kut-Master Kurt, 15 Test Yo Strengths | Machine Drum | Bidnezz When he's not trapping himself in the glitch-hop genre, Travis can pull a mesmerizing original track out of his hat. 16 Windytreehouserollerdisco | Homelife | Guru Man Hubcap Lady Props to the Sun Ra influence in this offbeat funk 17 Sudden Stars | Stereolab | Margarine Eclipse Lost track of Stereolab sometime around '99. Turns out their sound has gotten more sophisticated, less drone-y. Obviously influenced by Sean O'Hagan's Brian Wilson obsession and ready to flaunt their art-rock abilities. 18 Walk Home | Piano Overlord | Tease EP Nice ditty in the pre-fuse73 vein by the prefuse73 guy 19 When I see scissors I can't help but think of you | The Dead Texan | The Dead Texan This song is indicative of the nature of the entire album: Chill Out -- ~a

I'll follow this up with some of my fav's of the year in no particular order and i'll be as wordy as i wanna be. i will say that i spent more time going back than foreward as there is so much crap to wade through these days everytime i picked up something "new" to me, it was actually released some other year. --- 2004 favs --- Soulseek Records : 24 Hour Massacre : http://www.soulseekrecords.net/gods/releases/release.php?id=7 This stuff not only rocks the body it'll clean your head off too with sounds from staple beats, fat bass, munched madness you name it. and it's free. and the concept is cool as hell - each track was made in 40mins and mixed to the others. funkinell! Squarepusher (!that's right fan-boys!) : Ultravisitor : I know it's not the hippest thing to say but I broke through on this one after a healthy night of booze. And now i have access to it's fruits forever you suckers! That flamingo guitar track is off the hizook. Amunition : that planet mu mix : ZIQ095 what can you say - this pretty much takes every techno masshup ragga drill and amen break rude boy boomba clot space time thing and suttfs it into a most obnoxious 80 min mix. i can't tell if it's good because my brain speeds from one fuggin moment to the other so fast i barely catch my breath on some gorgeous deep end tracks before racing off. road-trip essential - though it will damage your hearing. i'll never forget. Global Goon : Family Glue Why is everyone so angry - listening to goon's albums is better than family theorpy. Lush, thematic well produced stuff that has you caught at track 1 and pulls on thru. Would never be ashamed to have my grandparents listen along on this one! Real clean johnny! 7 Untitled tracks in ogg format in a curiously named directory : I don't know anything about these - haunting broken piano melodies with frantic drill and tin-can beats with steam whistle snares. and then the bass! braindance for sure! John Tejada : Logic Bank Memory Center : This has been given enough + marks i don't feel like going into it. just get it. Straight Ahead, no stopping. --- new to me favs --- Isan : meet next life (ya i know it's from 2003 but i missed it ;-) Lush warm chillout textures - perfectly balacned with the lightest of rythyms - guaranteed to bring a warm feeling to any room. Merck Mix 2 Another awewsome display! i hear there is a vol 3, but what the hell - this compilation alone is gonna have me buying more merck in the future. ---- remember when : ---- Children of the Bong : Serious Sounds : a couple years this sounded dated. this year it became friendly again. old school at one of it's high points --- not "idm" : --- Oysterhead - a bizzare collection of rock music somewhere between primus , ween, phish and good ol fashioned cool. The "New Metaphysics" MP3's - check google - spoken word, idm, and prophets and nutters to feed your head. from Gary Geiserman @ newmetaphysics.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
