The « jazz » statement seems like the « electronic music » compulsory
figure.
I mean any Roland-based dumb track always claimed some doubtful jazz legacy.
But making jazz takes more than striking a 7th chord or shuffling a MIDI
clip.
« Classically trained » ? Richard Devine and Kirk Degiorgio come to mind,
however formal training doesn't sound like the IDM™ to my ears.
I didn't comment on the praises i've read here about Mike Paradinas a few
days ago, but this is nauseous breakbeat-opportunistic piss-poor polyphony
to me (i had the right to remain silent and, as you can tell, i used it
wisely).
Not everybody is Kettel.
If IDM is « classically trained », would you say that « classic dance music
» is not ? Quite the opposite, in my opinion.
More often than not, « electronic music » seems to seek some
respectability, much like spoiled children shitty « house producers » from
the 90s wanted to appear as the next Berry Gordy.
« Justified and ancient », as the KLF used to say.
Do jazz musicians claim that they achieve counterpoint mastery ? Hell no,
they humbly play their part (which incidentally takes up all of their
lifetime).
I've always found that ubiquitous « techno-jazz » statement embarrassing —
or is it just marketing ?
I must admit that this SONCAS <
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SONCAS>
discovery was quite questioning to me.
Are we just hipsters ? I don't think so. But i find the « electronic music
» inability to face up to itself quite worrying.
Time will sort it out.
