Definately pick up the L'usine CD. Its one of the better things have heard in the last 6 months or so. Its melodic yet sycopated and disjoited. I've been playing this one in the car on the way to work the last couple of days. Ack! I'm sorry to see Jeff has fallen victim to hideous background syndrome. You have to copy the text off of the reviews page and paste it into notepad (or some other equally horrible solution) just to read it. However, his music is much better than his web-pages. I picked up the latest release, A Psuedo-Steady State on U-Cover. Very different to his self-titled album, much more varied and laid-back with lots of acoustic samples and live-sounding drums. (Strangely it's actually released under the name L'Usine ICL perhaps to emphasise this difference in style) Actually I confess I didn't like it much at first but it's one of those things that grows and grows and now I love it - and I think that "growing" process is a definite plus in favour of it. Highly recommended, snap it up while you can. Just wanted to add I finally got my copy of PSS and I think it's great. The music isn't as straight-ahead melodic IDM as the s/t album, but it's always great to see an artist progress into more complex territory. I think this LP is contains music that's a little less accessible - more soundscapes and dspness (but not in an indulgant way :) -Gil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Agreed- his first album is great! But am I the only one who was feeling a bit dissapointed in A Pseudo Steady State? Maybe he's just trying to turn over a new leaf, but I'm not digging the down tempo, spacey laid back-ness of it. Where did all the skittery computery sounds go? I guess there's a couple/a few on there like that. Hopefully I can dump it at a used store for a couple bucks. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

8) I was lucky to buy the pseudo state earlier than the s/t album and thus I love both of them the same (though it seems to me that the s/t is stronger and the second one is more charming). They are different though absolutely brilliant anyways. Hope his next releases will come soon. Alien np. I really liked A Psuedo Steady State. It wasn't at all what I was expecting and I was kind of nonplussed at first but after listening to it a few times it really grew on me, much as I like his previous style on the self-titled album. I have to say that for me the L'usine ICL album, a pseudo steady state was the most important release of 2k. The fact that there are so many inconspicuous organic elements, yet it still has that idm dsp-driven sound really makes it a standout. Someone was talking about with everyone having the same tools (in the dsp thread) everything starts sounding a like. Well this is the first album in some time to really have a unique sound. Granted I loved the Isophlux releases, and the change took a little while to get used to, but I think the music that this points towards is more innovative and groundbreaking than the pure DSP driven laptop styles (tho' i love that stuff too). Anyway, YMMV :) -Gil np: the young gods.second nature --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

For those out there who prefered his selt titled album to the Pseudo Steady State cd, I would suggest his recent Surface 12". Much more of a return to the sound of the first cd (i.e. much more computery and glitchy) with a bit more emphasis on the four-on-the-floor kick. Not that you're ever gonna hear this alongside some throbbing loopy techno track at your local discotech, but it's absolutely worth searching out. Oh yeah- 4 tracks on it, one of which shows up on that Isophlux best of / retrospective / compilation cd. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Machine Drum's album Now You Know is incredible. Does he/her/they have anything else out? Proem, Jetone, Prefuse 73, Crunch, and While are all artists to check out. There are many more, but these are the ones I have recently discovered. I saw L'usine a few weeks ago with Solvent here in Pittsburgh. Great show. L'usine's show was very punchy. Is his new album out now? I know there was a newer 12" that he had out on Ghostly, but I haven't heard that. On Tue, 2 Nov 2004 15:26:13 +0000, Alan R. Lockett <alan.r.lockett@bristol.ac.uk> wrote:

http://www.ghostly.com/1.0/ At the bottom left, under "Coming Soon." Called Serial Hodgepodge, and he's been playing parts of it in his live gig since the beginning of this year, maybe earlier (last time I saw him). It's punchier, dare I say poppier L'usine than what most people are used to, although Jeff still gets a nice level of percussive, crunchy sound elements into the mix. Strong, almost hum-able melodies, and dancefloor/alt-radio friendly in the way that only Ghostly has been lately. Recommended for new fans and old, but come with an open ear if your first L'usine experience was his Isophlux album. Heath "Alan R. Lockett" wrote:

Yeah, I have his Isophlux album, but this new one is a masterpiece. In my world that is. Sure I guess you could say it's "poppy" but I feel like there has gotten to be this stale feeling to a lot of "IDM" a generic sound, I guess. This doesn't have it, has good sound design but isn't overboard or too mechanical sounding on it, and is the type of groovy shit that can get stuck in your cd player for days. Then I listened to that Isophlux album and while I listened to that for years it suddenly sounded kinda dated. Anyways I like "serial Hodgepodge" quite a bit. --- lazlo <muziq@ionet.net> wrote:
