http://www.bartleby.com/65/na/narodnik.html I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but last Thursday was a performance by Narodniki in Berlin, which this time consisted of (Left to Right): http://www.c4.ca/narodniki.jpg Richie Hawtin Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric) Luciano Ricardo Villalobos Monolake Zip Scion/Vainqueur/Substance Cabane All played on their laptops, un-synched, at a tempo of 120 BPM, with the exception of Monolake who was the conductor, or better the controller, who used the mixer to determine which artists were being mixed with which and how. Zip and Ricardo also took a few moments to control. The best way to describe it is free-form laptop jazz orchestrated by a perfectionist. You gotta love European arts subsidies. If you live in Holland or nearby, check out Dif:use 9 Okt @ Burgerweeshuis Deventer, plus solo set by Static and Legowelt, Funckarma dj set! Dif:use is Roel Funcken (Funckarma), Don Funcken (Funckarma), Martijn Hoogendijk (EOG; Alden Tyrell), Hanno Leichtmann (Static), Gersom van de Bunt (Nynack), Cor Bolten (Mecano) en Daniel Meir. I saw them last thursday in The Hague (Roel/Don/Hanno/Cor and visuals by Michel de Klein) and it was pretty cool stuff. Visuals steered by the music, comparable with the Ganz Graf graphics. Main theme of the project: complex rythmic structures and the fusion of these structures with musical layers (melody, drones). Each labtopper has one of those layers. Their goal is to find the perfect balance between order and chaos. Between dansable stuff and experiment. Not to be missed! Cheers, Tinus. -----Original Message---- From: underscan [mailto:liste@underscan.de] Sent: vrijdag 8 oktober 2004 19:23 To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] Narodniki - The laptop supergroup we´ve been doing the exact same thing for over a year now in berlin... some friends and I caught the first Narodniki performance at Mutek 2003, it was techno history. they've probably refined their performance since, but the line-up was a bit different back then also. you can see some pics, text and stream the set from the archives on mutek.ca, but the real player version is broken so you'll need quicktime. cheers, constantine ~scant_intone___ _ www.panospria.com www.phoniq.net www.welovemusique.com "What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is only related to objects, and not to individuals, or to life." -Michel Foucault --- Tosh Cooey <tosh@c4.ca> wrote: Date: Tue, 05 Oct 2004 01:07:19 +0200 To: 313@hyperreal.org, idm@hyperreal.org From: Tosh Cooey <tosh@c4.ca> Subject: Narodniki - The laptop supergroup Message-ID: <4161D7A7.3000509@c4.ca> http://www.bartleby.com/65/na/narodnik.html I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but last Thursday was a performance by Narodniki in Berlin, which this time consisted of (Left to Right): http://www.c4.ca/narodniki.jpg Richie Hawtin Max Loderbauer (Sun Electric) Luciano Ricardo Villalobos Monolake Zip Scion/Vainqueur/Substance Cabane All played on their laptops, un-synched, at a tempo of 120 BPM, with the exception of Monolake who was the conductor, or better the controller, who used the mixer to determine which artists were being mixed with which and how. Its funny how a person can work on an original idea to find other people in the world working out the same thoughts... I've been working on a few compositional pieces over the last year for small groups of electronic musicians, laptop artists and a DJ/mixologist. My intent is having a Sun Ra or Mingus approach to spontaneous and collaborative electronic music from a working collective with some structural ideas and themes. Wish I could have checked out some of Narodniki's stuff...what does it sound like?, what are the players roles with each other? Locally here in Seattle I have seen some sick music be created by Nordic Soul and Kris Moon among a couple others improvise around each other with there laptops as a group using Abelton Live software.. also Zapan, DJ N and Abs. Madman with a similar type of set up but Madman with more hardware. Anyhoo back to our local erupting ash news loop. later, Nth _________________________________________________________________ On the road to retirement?
