Most discussion these days revolves around the latest releases, this year's top 10, the over-hyped albums of the year, etc. You know what I'm talking about. And people talk about the same artists over and over, slowly and surely building the pedestal underneath them - you know who I'm talking about. This is all not without merit - those releases and artists deserve to be talked about at least because people want to talk about them. But as time goes by, many other releases fall by the wayside. Good music comes out that is missed, looked-over, underappreciated. We all catch a few here and there, but don't talk about them much, and the community as a whole doesn't recognize them because only a few of us have fallen in love with them. So I'm curious, what are a few of your favorite releases that you feel have gone unnoticed and deserve more attention? Especially from artists that stopped making music, drifted away, but left behind a gem or two of classic IDM... what few releases do you love that have that classic IDM sound, releases that you think are exceptional - or at least that are really hitting you this week - but that you don't think have been mentioned on the list at least within the last year or two, if at all? Let's have a roll call of these lost echos of the scene... and avoid the "big names" for awhile. I'll start with two: System Error - "Nothing" (headphone records) I think this is a stellar IDM release, with composition not unlike some early Autechre, but possessing its own unique flavor. A project of Bobby Bird (Higher Intelligence Agency) and Brian Duffy (?), it's less ambient than you might expect, and a one-off that can be appreciated on its own merits. I come back to it a lot to chill out and to be reminded of the great creativity just waiting out there to be found. Lewis Overton - "Something Like Close To This" (sprout recordings) The last release from now defunct Sprout, which was an offshoot of the also now defunct Hydrant Records (which gave us Proem), this EP was quite a surprise. I didn't really appreciate it at the time, and I still feel that most of the Hydrant/Sprout material was pretty mediocre, but this one EP has grown on me over the few years since its release. It's definitely a throwback to the old Artificial Intelligence sound, but unlike much of the "me too" AI copycat material out there, this one does it well and wants to be heard again and again. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Wow! Amazing that you should mention this one. I really really like "Something like close to this," and I would say it's really the only worthwhile release on Sprout, as the other four just seemed to be the Varathane guy stroking his own ego by releasing under as many aliases as possible. I also never really noticed this release until last year or so, but now I really appreciate it. Let's see... I don't think that Freeform has ever received the credit that he deserves (on this list or anywhere else, for that matter). I still really really like Green Park, and the Audiotourism disc was really good as well (and had some stunning photography, to boot). I'm interested to see where his next full-length on Skam goes. I'll have to think of some others... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Pub - Summer (Vertical Form) Classical thingy with remixes of Nick Rapaciolli, Vladislav Delay and Arovane. Pretty weird in the sense that this is a remix album but none of the tracks reminds of the original version still very cool and warm album Octex - Idei Laheshna (Tehnika) Pretty unknown artist from Slovenia which makes music alike Basic channel Stuff (reminds me of Fluxion but has more of techno feeling). Nautilis - Are You An Axolotl/Sketched Vol.2 I don't know if these are forgotten or unnoticed but I feel like this artist isn’t noticed as much as it should be. Am-Boy - Floridina (Wobblyhead) Everybody is crazy about Boards Of Canada and it seems that they don't see another fine music of this kind being released. Nice piece of music. Along those lines would be all of the old Stasis + pseudonyms, Beltran's Placid Angles material, the A.R.T. catalogue and Likemind 1-4. But most of that is really familiar territory to anyone who's been into electronic stuff for the last decade. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Nautilis was? Really? Yeah, I missed that, too. I think that o9 is more poster boy that Lusine. Is Lusine still a big name around here. I bet Jimmy Edgar would be bigger if he wasn't on Warp, given the current Warp backlash around here. It's called I CAME HERE TO TELL YOU HOW IT'S GOING TO BEGIN, but it doesn't seem to be out quite yet. See http://www.coad.to for what details there are. I've heard it, and like it very much. I've been really digging that mix a lot ever since I picked up the Utopia remix album. One of my favourite classic IDM artists is Germ. Around '93, when hardtrance, hardcore/gabba and jungle dominated he started releasing very abstract trax that were a mixture of (quite slow) techno, electronics and a bit of jazz. So, what do you reckon of the latest stuff, recorded under his real name (Tim Wright) on novamute? Ok, so maybe not IDM, but soooo funky. For things in a similar 'odd' style, check out his work with Sand (the first album "Beautiful people are evil" is excellent) - Sand also has Hillary Jeffrey on trombone (as on the black chair EP)... He did some harder-edged stuff as Tube Jerk on Sativae, which is also killer. York Rules!! I have both Narcolyptic Symphony and the "Hello My Name Is" EP, and I enjoy the EP more than the full-length. I also agree, he is highly underrated. A word of warning, however. "Most Of Me Just Thinks It's Because You're Heartless" is strictly beatless and not really in line with his other releases. That release was also just a cdr that he distributed to friends (50-100 copies i believe). The track "1.4 Four" from Hello My Name Is (is) yumful . I love Adam's initial post, because I too find that if it doesn't get mentioned on this newsgroup within the first year of being released it will never be heard from again. I prefer to have the best of the last couple of years, not just in the last 12 months because who can keep up nowadays? I listen to about 10-15 new releases per month, and many of those are not new releases. Therefore a lot go unnoticed until a year or two later. Other notable releases that are staples in my collection buy hardly hear anything about are: num num - unknown sources (not sure if this is gimmik but it sure sounds like it). pub - do you ever regret pantomime (summer seems to grab all the attention but this is definately high-quality varied listening bliss) animals on wheels - nuvol i cadira (the only real indie/folktronica release i can enjoy time & time again. other releases by him are different and focus more on drum & bass/breaks). ceephax - this guy deserves more recognition for his acid jams and melodics. he's pretty inconsistent, but some tracks are stellar. cj bolland - the electronic highway. most people talk about his "4th sign" release, but EH has some of the most engaging atmospheric techno i've ever heard. dron - xenologix (if you like b12's time touist, chances are you'll like this release for the same reasons. download - III - most people know them for thier industrial music, but this one is a great electronic disc. kschzt - you probably know him as MD but he changed his name from one stupid alias to a different one, but his music is percussion-based ear-tweaking goodness. multicast - interesting combinations of sounds from these guys that i never hear anybody mention. spark - he's known for a couple of releases recently, but his releases from mp3.com (the grey box, oto ambient collection, and science fiction) are good idm listen. phil western - the escapist (highly underrated artist who has contributed to download and plateau and here he mixed a variety of styles like shoegaze, techno, and experimental from track to track). Got to agree here. 'Unomia' is wonderfuly. I'm not aware of his entire output but for starters there's an exclusive Helios track on the Neo Ouija Cottage Industries 3 : Vestibule & Separate compilation and he will be releasing a full length album of solo piano works on the Type label late this year under the pseudonym 'Goldmund'. There's also a short albums worth of downloadable mp3 material available on his website, which is also very nice (and much in the style of 'Unomia'): http://acre-c.com/helios/main.html <http://acre-c.com/helios/main.html> )Jq. _____ <http://spreadfirefox.com/community/?q=affiliates&id=2546&t=55> Get Firefox!

Another one that I think is pretty underrated (or at least, I don't remember ever reading anything about it here) is Normal's "World Fuels" EP on AI Records. Yes, I know there's lots of hype surrounding AI (well deserved, I'd say), but the title track of this EP is just sublime. Artificial Intelligence-era IDM if there ever was any. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
