out now on neo ouija-
zegunder-Distant birds? Thought they were leaves -neo 26 cd
New on Neo Ouija. Zegunder are alosha tsinovoi and gil cohen. both live and
create music in the northen israeli city of haifa, where the picturesque
carmel mountains meet the mediterranean sea on one side of the bay. On the
other, the industrial and highly polluted "kishon" sea port: oil from big
ships, dead fish and birds cover the public beaches, all providing a telling
reminder as to the true nature of this place. standing near the stela maris
lighthouse, on the edge of the cliff, you can see more than one third of
israel, from the lebanese border in the north to the monstrous "hadera"
power plant in the south, a panoramic view summoning unbearable, inescapable
feelings of claustrophobia and incompetence. After rich experiences in the
ranks of local post rock bands like "MuTe" and "Birdy", "telling it like it
is" didn't feel right any more to gil and alosha, just too plain and
straightforward for the ambivalent nature of existence in israel. After a
period of working with small solo projects and recording for film
soundtracks, the feeling that something must be said grew stronger.
Zegunder's music unfolds with dense, rich stretches of ambience, broken
electronic emissions and vocal accompaniments from daphne haller - more like
an additional instrument than something associated with words. There's a
slowly unfolding, largely instrumental beauty on show here, reminiscent at
times of the spooky effervescence of Angelo Badalmenti with its engulfing
cinematic sweeps while, at others, their music is quietly personal and
introspective, free of words or set narrative. In fact, this is when their
music works best - creating a buzzing mesh of layered sounds, a background
to all the complexities and uncertainties day to day life brings, especially
in this particular part of the world.
