I'll be driving with a friend from North Carolina to Arizona next week and notice the drive will only take 30 hours or so. This leaves me with ample time for sightseeing. Any of you out there in the southern states or othewise have some recommendations of must stop eateries or points of interest? New Orleans and Austin are two definites but other than that Im open. SB- i've done that drive numerous times and i wholeheartedly recommend that you try to avoid I-10. take I-40 if possible and you'll enjoy the trip more. biloxi mississippi is right on the gulf coast and is surrounded by beautiful beaches. the drive through biloxi and into pass christian was really nice. we got to see a bunch of fishing shacks that made me feel as though i was driving through the 1800's. it's a bit out of the way but get down to carlsbad caverns in new mexico. you'll feel like you're on the moon and the temperature is about 40F cooler than the desert outside. really cool environ, be sure to leave before the 20 million bats take flight though. oh yeah, avoid speeding through texas. i was pulled over and questioned for 30 min by a cop. the cop said that i was speeding (cruise control was set to exactly the speed limit!) but i think he pulled me over because i had a white van with california plates. i guess i fit the profile of a cocaine runner or something. if i had to see just one more "don't mess with texas" sign i think i would've cracked. maybe you'll have better luck. my friend and i made it to flagstaff arizona from orlando florida, nonstop in 35 hours. it would be best for you to not attempt that. ouch* -cheers StaticBeats <stupidnametaken@yahoo.com> wrote: I'll be driving with a friend from North Carolina to Arizona next week and notice the drive will only take 30 hours or so. Yeah if you take 1-40 you should head about 45 minutes north of Albuquerque to Tent Rocks, I think you take the Cochiti Pueblo exit, then take a right when you come to a tee, then a left to head into the pueblo, and there should be signs from there. Or ask someone there. Probably a bit of a detour but well worth it, one of the most tripped out places I've ever been too. Also if you pass through southern New Mexico White Sands is cool, only try and hit that at sunset if possible cause otherwise its too hot and bright. Also there is some meteor crater off 1-40 in Arizona that you have to pay to get in to look at and it's kinda interesting for about 30 seconds, in a sorta 70's prog rock album cover sort of way. But Tent Rocks definitley beats all in my book! --- StaticBeats <stupidnametaken@yahoo.com> wrote:

Screw barbecue. If you're in Austin, eat Mexican or you're wasting your time. And as always, Magnolia at 3am. Roden Crater rocks!!!!!!!! http://www.rodencrater.org/ http://home.sprynet.com/~mindweb/page38.htm http://www.lasersol.com/art/turrell/rc_intro.html "James Turrell is one of the world's greatest living artists. Mention his name within art circles and there is generally a recognition of his name and his works. Outside of the international art community, Turrell is only known to a few. This artist of light, perception and spaces has created some of the world's most interesting art. Mention the word 'art' and most people think of a painting that hangs on a wall. Turrell's works are not of this nature and are usually spaces filled with light in such a way that you question the source of the light and your perceptions of what you are seeing." "The Roden Crater project is Turrell's most ambitious project and is being constructed in a dormant volcano in the Painted Desert of northern Arizona, northeast of Flagstaff. Turrell purchased the land with grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Dia Art Foundation and others. He is transforming Roden Crater into a space whose art is as much in the light of space and objects as it is in the spaces created in the crater. It will be your perceptions and interactions with the space and the ever-changing nature of light created by the light of the sun, moon, stars and other celestial events that will drive the art. Much like other civilizations throughout history that have built large structures that embody knowledge... scientific, cultural and spiritual, so will the Roden Crater project." seek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
