I swear, for all the talk about this album, am I the only one who thinks
Terminal Orange is the best IDM song of the year? White, Red and Grey
don't even come in a close second. I think the predominant effect on
the album that no one has mentioned yet, but is probably the defining
sound, is the use of delay. It's very effective in Red, and while it's
much simpler in Orange, the wonderful choice of rhythm turns a simple
random lead with delay into a stunningly yet subtly beautiful sea of
melodic bliss. Okay, that's probably a bit much.
There are some more experimental and textural tracks which are nice here
and there, but I'm finding I really don't care for too much abstraction
in electronic music anymore... I think I just really like somewhat heavy
and straight forward beats.
But all in all, while really solid, it is lacking. I find there are
very few electronic albums out there by any artist where there isn't at
least one lame, useless, and underproduced track that should have been
left on the cutting room floor. Terminal Yellow I feel fits this bill.
