i think it was kid606 who made a great point that if you're doing experimental music you have to accept that sometimes the experiment isn't going to work. being that warp is supposedly an electronic and experimental music label, i'd apply this here. seems to me warp is trying to expand out of being a pure "IDM" label by signing vincent gallo, broadcast, and !!! maybe these aren't all great choices or albums (although i like gallo's), but they're trying something different. if they think it's not working maybe they'll try something else. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Am I the only one who believes Warp's notoriety came from putting out more dance-friendly records than IDM? The Black Dog catalog, the LFO catalog, Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works 85-92', Polygon Window's 'Surfing on Sine Waves', the original 'Artificial Intelligence' compilation, Speedy J's 'Ginger', etc. These are the releases that defined Warp. When the whole IDM craze happened and was defined, I thought that's when much of Warp's lackluster records were coming out. Especially since Planet Mu, Rephlex, Skam, etc. were already getting a massive amount of attention (and deservedly so) by putting out so many great records in such a short span of time. In my opinion, it's been a departure that's been going on for a while now and there have been many great releases (both of Gallo's releases immediately come to mind). Oh well amg --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The thing about Warp is thier eclectic nature, and the fact that they have put out quite a variety over the years. I think a lot of thier older artists have been putting out shitty albums this past year, like TLS and Squarepusher, but thats not really thier fault. And they have been dipping more into the band puddle than the electronic one, but all of the Arcola stuff I've liked. They are still the label that has by far put out some of the most classic music over the years, and given thier artists the best contracts and hasn't tried to compromise the music to make cash. And some of it's good and some bites but I don't feel they have "fallen off". At least they are'nt trying to recycle a predictable output or appealing to the mainstream cookie cutter sounds. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
