When I used headphones to write electronic music, it would sound great
when listening to it in headphones (I was using a Sony MDR-V700 set), but when
I played it in on a stereo or in my car, it didn't sound the way it should. I
even tried using a friend's pair of headphones that were studio quality for a
while, but it still sounded different. I've found that studio monitors are
the best way to compose, cause there really is a difference when your ear is
right against the speaker, like when using headphones, and when you are
listening using a system or home stereo. I like the Alesis Mk2 powered monitors, and
they were something like $350 (I think) for a pair using musician's friend.
Make sure whatever you get has a flat frequency response (I'm pretty sure
that's the right terminology). You don't what your speakers or headphones to have
a permanent filter while you are writing tracks. If you are looking for low
bass, a sub is highly recommended as well.
