For their HEADSET album Allen Avanessian (Plug Research supremo and keen
producer in his own right) and Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, The Postal Service,
Figurine) decided to bring their extended family a little closer together:
John Tejada and Daedelus did additional productions, while Thomas Fehlmann
(Orb, Ocean Club) added atmospheres to "Sound of A Squint". Words to the beats
came from a number of local and distant MCs - in the true spirit of musical
networking Non-GENETIC of the Shadow Huntaz (featured on Then Again & Back
Before) not only brought Metalogic and his cousin Rocmon (who is also featured
on "Then Again") along to the recording, but also introduced Headset to Lady
Dragon, whose rhymes over ³Grasping Claw² in Japanese have an impressive flow.
Local hero Subtitle, contributed his atypical rhyming style on ³Breath
Contrails², probably closest of all to the West Coast sound, while Beans (Anti
Pop Consortium) got involved via a long-distance exchange: when Allen
sent him a beat, he came up with "Jaw Modulation", already destined to become
a timeless hip hop classic.
Overall, ³space settings² is constructed from what it isn¹t: ³This is not a
hip hop record, not an electronic record and definitely not a jazz record, but
we're influenced by all of these and love to create our own interpretations of
these genres. That's really what makes making music so much fun for us.".....

August Engkilde, jazz-bass player from Copenhagen, founded EPO as an open
collective of musicians in 2002. Although the overall sound is based on jazz,
EPO expand and extend this aural fundament with irreverent snippets of hiphop,
dub, latin and funk. Subtle electronics determine the tracks structures: most
of the time, it might just be a gentle, almost indiscernible pulse ticking
away in the background, swathed in a warm double bass, brass section and
guitar. Then again, synthesiser and samples might fight their way to the
surface and decide to lead the expedition for a while. Last, but by no means
least, there is the voice of Frida Asmussen, leaving no room for uncertainty
why scape had to initiate a pop label just for this project: her
characteristic, precisely accentuated vocals rush into wonderful choruses to
warm the heart and open the sound. And, as if Engkilde and guitarist Joakim
Frøystein couldn¹t stay seated in face of this all, they, too, grab the
microphone for one singalong track "Sing the Tom-Tom². But although the vocal
tracks might supply the album´s most obvious hits, the delicately bubbling
instrumentals, too, are relentlessly catchy and engaging. This is no
ornamental, audible wallpaper, but a varied blueprint of pop with an infinite
number of hidden gems.....

Nowadays, there¹s hardly a club without electronic-visual features, hardly an
event without VJs. DIN AV 04/01/CN/86.03, the first release on brand new
~scape sub label dvdscape, highlights the personal and general development of
this still relatively young VJ culture in which any division between art,
commissioned work, club or high culture has become irrelevant. Initiated and
curated by Berlin-based visomat inc (dedicated to the visualisation of music
between media art and club culture since the mid-90s) this first instalment of
an upcoming series provides insights into an extraordinarily vibrant and
multi-faceted club video scene. Whether medial space design, installation,
concept art, entertainment or simply aesthetic backdrop the 7-10-minute VJ
mixes featured on this DVD (set to the music of their choice) celebrate the
renunciation of and return to the video clip in an evolutionary and
self-renewing progression. Supplemented by extensive background and bonus
material these mixes work both as audiovisual wallpaper and undivided
attention grabbers. In separate interviews Pit Schulz questions all artists
involved on the interrelation between image and music and the role of the
VJ....
