Tonight at Tonic: "New Interfaces for Musical Expression"
from
http://stage.itp.nyu.edu/show/
"Graduate students from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications
Program present a menagerie of freshly-prototyped experimental
interfaces for musical performance. New strategies for mapping
large-muscle, physical, messy musical gestures into clean ones
and zeros take computer music beyond the "office gesture" typical
of laptop performances. Using light, motion, flex, pressure, tilt,
color, etc. as inputs, these prototypes explore new prospects for
the intimate control of electronic music. Special emphasis has been
placed on creating new gestural tools for DJs."
We've had a couple good discussions on the list about the good
and the bad of laptop-related performances. By the sound of it,
this event ought to engage the debate pretty directly. Ought to be
interesting.
