NEW RELEASE :::
The latest album in our 2004 limited edition series was released last week:
PIE028 : John Chantler : _Locked In Hands_
_Locked in Hands_ documents John Chantler in transition. Taking sounds and
performances recorded over the course of relocation from his idyllic
apartment in rural Japan, back to Australia and across to the crowded
streets and dirty air of London.
It opens with the clanging ring of a piano, left outside on a Brixton
street until its keys have swollen together, its strings rusted and
structure threatened by the kindly English weather. It ends with processed
recordings of the choir and organ at St Albans Abbey spinning over deft
drumming from John Parker (Ubique Trio). A pair of tracks derived from
sessions in Australia with former bandmate Peter Bent sit in between. The
first reconstucting a laconic acoustic strum as hyperactive digitised
splutters and the second leaving only the ebb and flow of feedback to play
out over its five minutes. "These Nine Years..." rearranges a melodic idea
conceived nine years ago with lo fi electronics, naked acoustic guitar and
motorik drums. A driving drum/bass pulse also provides the grounding for
the rolling bass and cymbal drones of "Opposite Ends of Same". "My Chinese
Toy" acts as a bridge between these two more percussive tracks - An
improvisation on a tiny accordian recieved as a gift and turned into
something other.
_Locked in Hands_ is a document of confusion and flux - of being somewhere
in between, collating one's history and looking beyond it.
