lol, this is the fucking funniest thing i've ever read in an interview with an electronic musician.... Were parts of Ultravisitor recorded on tour? Yes, in fact most of the tracks are recorded from shows either in the UK or in the US/Canada. The point of using live versions of the tracks is that they show stupid people that, though their own stubbornness prevents them from being able to engage with my music, they hear other people cheering in the background, and realise that although this music is obscure, it cannot be totally inaccessible because other people like it. Because it is obscure, but not totally inaccessible, this makes it cool. This makes stupid people buy it. One day their children will dust it off and play it, and realise that I am the supreme musical genius of my generation. This means I'll still be able to play gigs when I'm an old fart with no ideas. Hopefully. from: http://www.warprecords.com/?news=791 I was allways wondering how come so many people were shouting and screaming and generally getting excited at his gigs, I'd come to the conclusion that they were intimidated by his shouts of 'come on you cunts!!' but I guess his explanation makes sense too :) ...skism --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I screamed till i lost my voice at the last show of his i went to. he had to paid me $100 to do it. ;) no really, i love him. he's really inspired me as a musician and all this shit about him losing it or whatever is just bitterness. if you think old music is better then don't buy new stuff. no reason to listen to it, no reason to bitch about it. your minds have just gotten used to hearing one thing and now that things are different you can't take it. with repetition comes comfort. it's the same thing most of our parents say about how the music we listen to is all crap compared to what they'd listen to back in the day. how cliched. -charlie http://groundchuck.net __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Squarepusher goes on stage, says hello, and fire up the strobes, put the amp on 120% and start playing bass like there's no tomorrow !!! leaves the stage about an hour or so later !! :-) Funny thing, in montreal, last summer, when he came, the show was so loud that people complained a bit, so, last week, he joked a bit about that, saying that he was going to play at half volume, and by combining both shows, the sound should be perfect !! :-)

the review that Blake posted pretty much said it all. i only disagree with that review about the last half of the show where he was playing bass. i guess it helped because i had a clear view of him playing from the right bass bin. his gear hid him from most of the crowd looking at him straight on. every note on the bass came through perfectly, but it may not have seemed quite so because he would put some synth effects on it for certain parts when he was jamming out. none of these bass songs were very recognizable, and they were a joy to hear. tom is just as much a virtuoso on the 4 and 6 string bass than with any of his electronic music. his gear consisted of 2 laptops, a Korg MS-10 or MS-20 (not sure which), a 4 string bass and a 6 string bass, and 2 12 space racks of effects and mixers. i think there were also a couple standalone midi controllers also. he stands behind them to do his thing, so you can't really see him unless you're on the side of the stage. he ended the set with a song from Big Loada (i think). i don't keep track of song names from these idm types so i'm not sure which. kenny the human orchestra was a fucking treat to see. he told us after the show he will be doing an improv jam with squarepusher at the chicago show. don't miss it if you have any control over what you do on friday! a couple pics of tom and kenny are here: http://www.krack.org/gallery/Squarepusher_20040407/ ~j ____________________ jason.clark http://www.krack.org ____________________ On Thu, 8 Apr 2004, Aaron D Meyers wrote:

Well then. Being the chronic procrastubator that I am. I successfully managed to miss the show. Making columbus around 9:30. VIA sold out tickets. Nontheless, we tried to gain access. At first scoping the building for a service entrance. Found a door that was unlocked and started running through the place. Then finding out we only had breached the music school. We had heard drums and thought we struck gold. Turns out it was some ass banging away on his set. OI. Several attempts later and still nothing. I decided we should gather the lot of us out front and bum rush the auditorium. With no support on that idea. I ran downstairs near the bathroom and saw some kids sitting in a commons area. We shared the same dilemma. So I rallied them up and we proceded towards the ramp. Guy ask for my ticket and I told him I had given it to the receptionist and continued walking. He was on to me from the get go. So I ran. Got to the top and wasn't sure how much further it would be. Yelled for directions to three kids walking out, confused one latently 'splodes back and to the left. All I see is a dark corner. Looks maybe like a door. I run into it searching for a handle. And nothing. Nothing but a goddamned black nook in the wall. By then I was corned by a grey haired suit and tie. He grabs for me. But I dodge as to go towards the actual doors. Only to see more lackeys waiting to nab me. So I know its up and procede back down the ramp. As he follows behind. One of his yuppie assistants walks up to explain they had failed to stop me. I hear him dispatch security. And so with a quick stride I made out of that bitch with the proverbial quickness. And after a long drive back to dayton then back to springfield. The first thing I did was hop on ticketmaster and snatched some tickets to the Chicago show. Something tells me it's for the best. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! review from one of the many messageboards I frequent: Simone and I got to the show at around 10:30, when Kenny Muhammad "The Human Orchestra" was on. HOLY SMOKIN SHxT!!!! this guy was doing amazing techno, breaks, and drum and bass all with his mouth, beatbox style!!! I've never seen anything like it - he did the breaks AND the basslines at the same time. he was freakin it HARD! plus, he had good MC skills and had the crowd cheering and clapping in time with his beats. This guy was the coolest, most original music act I've seen in months. He had me cheering and ooohing and ahhing. Everything from hard acid techno to some DARK d'n'b, all coming out of his mouth. wow. the crowd itself was huge - it was wall to wall. most people were standing, but there was a lot of dancing too. Kids were getting down and cheering the whole show through. You could definitely tell that this show was sold-out. then they had this DJ in between acts, he was playing hard as fxck jungle. can I just say that the Wexner soundsystem is fxcking DOPE?! it was such a pleasure to hear quality rough-in-the-jungle bizness on such a huge system. I guess it's not even that huge, really, but it is perfectly tuned for the space. Yanno that classic rave experience when you went to your first party, stood in front of the speakers and let some sick @ss d'n'b basslines run through you like a freight train? ohhh yeah, that's how it was. The DJ himself was just sorta ok - I expected better, but he was smooth at least. Still, with crazy jungle like that, I wanted to hear lots of juggling and cutting. oh well. then Squarepusher went on. DxMN! his shit was dark as fxck and hard as hell. his first few tunes were my favorites - he started out with fairly traditional jungle breakbeats and then freaked them and built them up until they were a brain-frying wall of motherfxcking noise made of layer after layer of evil analogue glitches and squiggles. At one point, he played this soul-crushing organ solo for what seemed like at least 5 minutes. It got to the point where I felt like I couldn't take it anymore, the deep slow basslines skaing the walls of the place and dragging me down. Then he came back with some ill breaky noise! all through his set, the only lighting was 4 spots and two strobes, which were all white and super bright. I gotta say, this was one abusive performance. It literally made me flinch and close my eyes. Squarepusher definitely knows how to fxck with your brain and your emotions with sound. it was as brutal a performance as any break-core set I've ever heard. Unfortunately, then he picked up a bass guitar. Now, I dunno if there was something wrong with the sound or what, but I couldn't really hear the guitar except for weird little bits that were off kilter. It looked like he was really jamming out, but only strange chunks of what he was playing came through the music. Plus, all the songs he played with the bass were more 4/4, super fast and repetitive. I really didn't like them at all as much as his break-beat stuff, and he kept going on and on with them. It was really kind of blah and didn't affect me like his breaky stuff. But since it was still hard as fxck and loud as hell, it started to really wear me down. After about 3 tunes like this (20-30 minutes), Simone and I were ready to go. Which was about 15 minutes from the end anyways. so that was the show... I'd say def. worth the $16 tickets, and afterwards I promised myelf I would start paying more attention to the events there. the music at the Wexner is awesome, and I've been going for the last two years, but it's always once and a while... there's more great shit going on there soon (like Prefuse 73 and RJ D2 ) and I will post up about it in the future so you guys can get your tickets in time! I wasn't able to get in due to it being sold out. after hearing this I'm going to Chicago to see the show Friday, there were different reviews on the bass playing in different parts of the thread.. but this was the only DECENTLY WRITTEN review. sorry I had to edit it to get the swearing out there.. posting from work, I'm not sure what gets flagged.. if you really want to waste some time and check out the thread I nabbed it from: http://www.ravetrash.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14915 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Mick Beck, Tom Jenkinson and others played the Spitz a few years back - a live jam from that is on the 'Lo and Behold' comp on Lo Recordings - it's pretty good; interesting improvisational jazzy stuff. (Think 'Music is Rotted...' but more noodly) I saw Squarepusher last year in Brooklyn and it was awesome! He played live bass throughout the whole set (and he improvised basslines over Kenny Muhammad's beatboxing as an encore as well :) Matt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i've been meaning to ask the list some Ultravisitor questions... firstly, when the appearance of 'live recordings' into 'studio recordings' occurs, how much of this is real? it's a really cool effect, and a really cool idea to do it to this extent, just wondering if anyone knows how much is true, as i wouldn't be surprised or blame him for just constructing the experience at points. secondly, is it Tom who plays what sounds like classical acoustic guitar on some tracks? jesus. amazingly complex, deftly played and composed. if that is all tom, that is just absolutely frightening. ps. i'm actually quite fond of Ultravisitor and Go Plastic. nat. http://www.littlefurythings.net

No shit. Ultravisitor was definitely my favorite release of 2004. I have hooked many stupid friends into the Colorado jam scene with Ultravisitor. For those that find any computer music repetitive and talentless, Ultravisitor is a good first step. I found the infrequency of typical drill'n'bass tracks on this album interesting. Ultravisitor and District Line II were great, but I wanted more. Then, thanks to Tom, we got Squarewindow and Venus 17. Wow, what a fantabulous artist. I can't sing this man's praises enough. I just pray to God he'll come back to the US. nat hawks <natbot@hotmail.com> wrote:i've been meaning to ask the list some Ultravisitor questions... firstly, when the appearance of 'live recordings' into 'studio recordings' occurs, how much of this is real? it's a really cool effect, and a really cool idea to do it to this extent, just wondering if anyone knows how much is true, as i wouldn't be surprised or blame him for just constructing the experience at points. secondly, is it Tom who plays what sounds like classical acoustic guitar on some tracks? jesus. amazingly complex, deftly played and composed. if that is all tom, that is just absolutely frightening. ps. i'm actually quite fond of Ultravisitor and Go Plastic. nat. http://www.littlefurythings.net

i'll second that, the song tetra-sync has become one of my all time favorite tracks. nat, yes the bass & guitar on SP albums are usually him, as are most of the drum parts on Ultravisitor. I've seen some great bass players live, Les Claypool and Victor Wooten being some of the best, but Tom put them both to shame, mind blowing talent.........
